phuuuuuuuckkkkkkk i missed the 24 of this one by mere hours…chronic illness sucks!
Just joining this disco party… Thank you Paul! I don’t think I was aware of this. Her big hit Never Knew Love Like This Before got so much airplay, but this one has great dance beats too! Have a great weekend and Happy Memorial Day to everyone here!
See my comments to MuffDiver for Ms. Mills’ somewhat brief history. There’s a whole lot more to her than just one pop hit and a Grammy. Enjoy your holiday!
Thanks for the lowdown on Ms. Mills. Of course, I also think of her for her contribution to the Fletch soundtrack, Bit By Bit. A #15 Dance hit and heavy rotation on MTV.
You’re welcome, Retro Hound 🙂
Thanks for this DJ Paul. It’s appreciated! I can’t help but ask – again? (sorry man) if there’s any chance at all that you could post Tiger Moon’s 24-bit FLAC of Something Tells Me (VCL Club Mix) here on your blog please? It was not released on the Soundtrack as far as I know but it WAS featured in one of the movies with Harrison Ford where he’s I think in some Discotheque in France? I think (which one – I can’t remember off the top of my head right now). Would be bad ass to have that as a… Read more »
You’re welcome, Hedo. I will see if I can locate a copy of that record.
MANY thanks for the awesome rip of this Disco Classic! 1979 was a great year for miss Mills, certainly prophetic for an also bright future in the 80’s (also for Mtume) I loved the whole album, even the ballads 🙂 Another super-gem of that era is “What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin'” (the 12” mix is SUPERB), that was covered later by “Inner City” with a perfect remix by David Morales (very respectful to the original). “Disco Friday” is doin’ GREAT so far – cheers Paul! Would love to see “Whatcha…” in a future Disco Friday post…
You won’t believe it, but I spent well over an hour trying to find “What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin‘“ on the BB dance chart, and had to give up guessing the 12” either wasn’t widely promoted to the record pools, or it didn’t get listed as “all cuts” for her album. The above song and “Put Your Body In It” stayed on the dance chart an amazing 22+ weeks. I talked to a couple of OG disco guys last night who confirmed it did get lots of club play but for whatever reason only charted R&B and pop.… Read more »
Very interesting! Thank you for all the info 🙂
You’re welcome. RtrHG
I used to do “Disco Friday” regularly many years ago it looks like folks are digging it so I will probably continue doing it 🙂 Thanks for your comment.
Great single and album from Stephanie Mills. I still hear this track every other weekend too.
I liked her single The Medicine Song, which was a later single.
Thanks Paul for the Disco revival 🙂
You’re welcome, Marco 🙂
Thanks for this Paul!
You’re welcome, Grant 🙂
My inner Luddite has never heard of this artist, or release. Mea culpa!
Thank you PaulT for broadening my musical horizons.
That’s what I love about, Paul. He’s always broadening my musical tastes! He’s such a force!!
Have a wonderful weekend, Muff Diver!!
Jeff
Ms. Mills rose to fame as “Dorothy” for five years in the Broadway musical The Wiz; later in 1979 she had club hits with “You Can Get Over” & “Put Your Body In It” (dance #8) and “What Cha Gonna Do with My Lovin'” (R&B #8; pop #22, but never appeared on the disco chart though the other two songs charted for at least 22 weeks, and the album went gold). In 1980 she released the Grammy winning “Never Knew Love Like This Before” (UK #4, US Dance #5, Hot 100 #6, R&B #12), later giving us the #3 dance,… Read more »
Excellent overview of Miss Mills’ “Rhythmic Resume” DJ XREY!!! You really know your stuff!!
Have a great day!!
Jeff
I don’t profess to know everything Jeff…I just have Internet access on my iPhone and perhaps share a fee of my experiences with Paul & his subscribers.
I appreciate your knowledge DJ XREY I do my best to get info but usually after spending hours working on the transfers I get a bit cloudy when doing research. That is why folks like you are important. 🙂
Paul, your research is always top notch. Sometimes a song or artist is mentioned that can have an interesting and perhaps relevant story or history attached and that’s where I like to contribute. It usually sends me down a rabbit hole, but I enjoy the discovery. I’d rather help there since you have a great studio for vinyl transfers and that’s more important to your community.
You’re very welcome, Muff Diver 🙂
One of her best! Thank you 😘
You’re welcome, Martika 🙂
At the risk of being offensive, Paul, this is the Disco Money Shot!!!!! I was first introduced to this record courtesy of New York’s Disco 92, WKTU!! It was an extended climax when I first heard it. And you know, even after hearing it a few times and buying the record, it’s been literally decades since I’ve last heard it. I am most grateful and humble to you for bringing this 12-inch disco disc back into my senses!! Wow, I’m foaming out the ears for this one!! I am going to have a satisfying weekend because of you, dear Paul!!… Read more »
LOVE your attention to detail, LOL! Hope you keep on grooving all weekend!
You’re never offensive! See my stats on Ms. Mills in my reply to MuffDiver for more on this talented lady.
You’re welcome, Jeff 🙂
