“101” is a 1988 song written by Prince (using his pseudonym Joey Coco) for Sheena Easton. “101” was the third single taken from Easton’s ninth studio album The Lover In Me. The single peaked at #2 on the US dance chart in the summer of 1989.

101 has the same melancholy loneliness ‘counting the days’ theme as ‘Nothing Comares 2 U’ and ’17 Days’ but much more darker and more isolated, almost angry. The song is from the Camille/Crystal Ball/Sign “☮” The Times era. The coldness is of course represented mainly by the LM-1 drum computer’s cold repeating, robotic, industrial, funk beat. The LM-1 is processed through effects, two of which are serendipitously the result of studio engineer errors that Prince liked which were the result of over loading effects to the point of distortion, this can be heard in Sign “☮” The Times songs like… Read more »
