BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988
“Superfly Guy” was the second single realesed by English dance music band S’Express, from their debut studio album, Original Soundtrack. The single reached #5 on the UK singles chart and #2 on the US dance chart. US copies of the single had samples replaced that differ from the UK release. According to Mark Moore’s web site “Funky Killer” became a secret weapon by djs such as J Saul Kane (Depth Charge) who would cover the label up on the 7″ and when asked, say it was a track from the 70s. The vinyl crackle in the track is meant to be there for effect.
For no reason the band changed their name from S-Express to S’Express.
The original 12″ mix has never appeared on CD.

Funky Killer has a strong Lalo Schifrin ‘Dirty Harry’ vibe. Schifrin did the score for four of the five Dirty Harry films.
Brilliant observation music_fan Says concerning Lalo Schifrin and Dirty Harry.
Jeff
Thanks very much for this Paul.
Okay, I know I just commented above. But, as is often the case, your post set off a downloading spree as I searched for some S’Express tracks that were noticeably absent from my MP3 collection. During this search, I discovered a new 2016 compilation of S’Express songs (released a few months ago) that are remixed by other artists who were apparently influenced by S’Express back in the day. Most of the tracks sound quite different from the originals, but there’s some good material here. The album is called “Enjoy This Trip” and it has a delightfully campy cover. Just thought… Read more »
Thanks for this. Do you have the 7″ version of Mantra For A State of Mind?
Thanks for posting the S’Express. Do you have the 7″ version of Mantra For A State Of Mind? I have the CD single but it only has the 12″ version.
Keep up the good work!
Here’s that interview I mentioned yesterday. (I posted it in yesterday’s comments too).

It’s quite lengthy and boring in places, but has lots of geeky detail, so I didn’t mind. Starts talking about Theme From S-Express about half way through.
BTW I didn’t realise they had all their samples re-done for the US until your posts. The same thing happened to Sigue Sigue Sputnik for Love Missile F1-11 – I wonder if the US had tighter sampling laws even in the 80s? (Or maybe just more litigious than the UK 😉 )
Maybe the law was the same, but the lawyers..
Great, great, great!
DjPaulT, you make me so happy with your hard work.
And those S’Express releases always had a special place in my heart.
Thank you!
Thanks, Paul. Soooooooooo much good music came out on Rhythm King.
Thanks DJPaul,
… more S’Express!
Hope for “Music Lover” US release (without “Hey”, right?)
Have a great weekend.
Thanks so much for this (as well as Theme from S-Express); they’re two tracks that always made me happy on the dancefloor!
Actually this 12″ Version is available on a scarce promo CD named “The Tower Trip”.
Kind regards, Christian
Thanks Christian just went by the info on Mark Moore’s page.
Well, it took me years to hunt it down, should’ve waited for your excellent post 😉

ooh me thinks this could be the start of a small s’express season eh Paul? They were a brilliant band, the music was fabulous and the image was flash, camp and funky. The spatial expansion remix of Hey Music Lover just blows the mind away, hey maybe that’s coming up, so love that mix! You had a really long megamix from the band, now what a treat that would so really be…
BIG MASSIVE THANKS for all you do Paul
Blowing a kiss from across the water as always x
You are correct Roy a mini S’Express run is in the works I do plan to re-rip the Megamix as well I think you may have requested that a while agao 🙂
oh mate… Bloody Brilliant… You never forget my friend, do you…
Oh, the happiness you bring to me Paul!! I never had this single, only the album version, but thanks to you, I am a very happy (superfly)Guy!! I can’t begin to express my gratitude for all that you do. All I’ll say is, WOW!! Seriously, I am so grateful. You’re tremendous for this.
Have a fantastic weekend Paul!!!
Big Hug!!
