BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983
-DjPaulT Recommended 12″
“Bitter Heart” is a single by British new wave group Seona Dancing, released in 1983. It is a David Bowie-style new wave pop song, sung by a then-unknown Ricky Gervais with synthesizers provided by Bill Macrae. The song was virtually unknown in their homeland of the UK, after only peaking at #79 on the UK Singles Chart, even though it remained in the Top 100 for 3 weeks.

Seona Dancing, this group should have been massive.
It was Madonna’s birthday the other week, Paul can you please post Vogue.
Do you like synth pop although with machines like “drum Machine” or some like these, you can easily make rithyms like most famous songs without too much science?. Thanks DJ Pault.
Woof, woof!!! More of Seona’s. Thank you Paul and stay well.
Great post Paul!, hope you don’t mind I’m adding a link to a remix edit with a bunch of samples!, I did this re-edit/mix back in 1998. Maybe someone might want to take a listen. BTW, this is edited purely edited using a mini disc recorder/player… and turn tables. enjoy!

Seona Dancing – Bitter Heart reminds me of David Bowie meets Japan, funny how Ricky Gervais had David Bowie appear with him on Extras, especially with Bowie singing “Little fat man with the little pug face…pug pug…pug pug” to Gervais’s character Andy Millman.
Paul thank you for these fantastic posts on Seona Dancing, Ricky Gervais is a comic genius, check out The Office (UK version) and Ricky’s live shows, he always has me on the floor with laughter.
I can’t wait to get my ears around this song again. In 24bit too.
Thanks Paul 🙂
You’re welcome Mark 🙂
Thank you, DJ Paul! I will wait until this afternoon to listen to it, don’t want to inundate my new neighbor this early in the morning, because I will probably listen to it 10 times in a row. 😉
Very cool Gizmo play it loud 🙂
I was hoping you’d post Seona Dancing’s first single 🙂
Thank you so much Paul.
Such a shame they didn’t/couldn’t release more music.
I’ve read that they recorded 16 demo tracks
when they first formed. Sadly only the songs from their singles & b-sides
have ever been heard publicly.. (I think I’m right in saying).
Wish they could have stuck around longer.
Definitely a band with great potential I think.
You are correct Jay according to Wikipedia they recorded several tracks at least an albums worth. Not sure why they were shelved.
Awesome, Thanks a million, Paul.
I would recommend this one over the others, it is more groovy. 🙂
You’re welcome Hugo 🙂
Cool cool cool – thank you so much Paul. This has cheered me up so much this week. I agree with you that this is the stronger of the two singles. The weave and flow of the song almost has an Associates feel to it. I do wonder if either of these singles had hit in 1983 if he would have ever been successful as a comedian, because he’d always then be known as a ‘has-been’, which is a hard thing to shake off in the UK at least. BTW, are you a fan of any of Ricky Gervais’s comedy… Read more »
Phil Thornalley did such great production on this single he was actually a former member of The Cure and Johnny Hates Jazz I also posted a solo single of his a while back, I thought of Associates too the first time I heard this record maybe that is why I prefer it. I am not really that familiar with Ricky Gervais’s work as a comedian.
Thanks for these forgotten singles from Seona Dancing. To be honest, I have forgotten about them until you post it.
You’re welcome steveasian 🙂
Thanks Paul for also posting the second and last single of this much underrated but brilliant band. Not as good as “More to lose” but also awesome.
You’re welcome Daniel. I actually prefer this one over “More To Lose” 🙂
Thanks Paul a billion. One of the best singles of the 80s.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
So appreciative of you Paul for doing these singles. I was familiar with “More To Lose” from a “Retro Active: Rare and Remixed” compilation, but I am very excited about this single. I love these lost classics, especially getting to know them through your tastes, equipment and wonderful ripping talents. You do provide treasures everyday and I can’t help but feel so lucky in this lifetime to come across a super individual such as yourself. Can’t wait to hear this.
Jeff
You’re welcome Jeff. I like this single better than “More To Lose” it’s got more of a dance groove in my opinion and really like the lyrics. 🙂
It is often rather obscure entries in the charts that sometimes, nevertheless, become and remain classics. ‘Tinsweltown in the rain’ somehow comes to mind as one of many of those tracks in Holland that have now cult status.
Thanks for this very rare material!
You’re welcome Martijn 🙂
