Screamin’ Lord Byron Featuring Thomas Dolby and Timothy Spall – The Devil Is An Englishman (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

A. Front

“The Devil Is An Englishman” is a 1986 single by Sreamin’ Lord Byron featuring Thomas Dolby and Timothy Spall taken from the soundtrack for the film Gothic.

In Ken Russell’s film Gothic, poet Lord Byron was played by Gabriel Byrne. Thomas Dolby’s soundtrack for the film closes with the song “The Devil Is An Englishman”, which prominently features samples of Byrne’s dialogue from the film, much of it shouted — hence, the half-serious “featuring Screamin’ Lord Byron” credit on the single and the soundtrack album.

I haven’t heard this one in a looong time. Pretty much forgot about it. It’s great to hear it again!

Never seen Gothic before, I will have to track it down. It’s not really my type of genre, but I’ll give it a try.

Ooh, is it gonna be Halloween-ish entries for the rest of the month? If so, yay! If not, still good! 🙂

Thanks, Paul!

Hey, thank you for that. Oh, I like your name a lot as it reminds me of one of my favorite bands, Shriekback. The song “Moth Loop” appears on their “Tench” EP.

Nice. I’ve dug Shriekback since my teens. You are the first person who ever got the reference (that I know of)!

You totally did the record justice! I thought I’d never hear the extended version of this song ever again. And if so, not in such splendid quality. Man, the stereo seperation is wonderful and the bass and treble are clear. I’m not a perfect audiophile, but I know what I like when I hear it, and this is stellar in my opinion. I love the lyrics to this and the samples from “Gothic” are a great touch. PluDear Paul, s, from what I can remember from the soundtrack album, sounds of the score are incorporated into the mix. I forgot… Read more »

Woz,

Actually no, but thank you for the compliment. I just get so full of excitement when it comes to Paul’s work, that the words seem to come out. I really love this place and the community here. The web can be so full of negativity, but on Burning The Ground, there is a lot of love and positivity and I am so grateful for that.

Right on, Jeff. You have a gift of expressing yourself in text, my friend. I have to agree, this place is great, lots of positivity here at BTG. How could there not be? With Paul taking music sharing to a level never seen before. He has attracted a pretty good group of people here to open and celebrate each audio treasure chest together in the comments.

Hello Everyone, I just re-watched the film “Gothic” over this past weekend, and I have to apologize for stating that the song “The Devil Is An Englishman” came during the end-credits of the movie. It does not appear anywhere in the film. I guess I played the soundtrack album so much back-in-the-day, that I assumed the song came at the end. Too bad. I’m wondering if a music video was ever filmed? It would be a trip if it was. Well, I’m sorry for the wrong information I passed along to everybody. Anyway, back to the movie. What a hallucinatory… Read more »

Well this was certainly unexpected! Not a great song but an embarrassment of riches in other ways. I wonder what led you to acquire this one. Ken Russell and his Merchant Ivory a-listers? Tom Dolby? Your selections are inscrutable man, I love it! This one’s just gone on my Halloween playlist. Harry Potter fans: Timothy Spall = Peter Pettigrew!
