Billy Idol – Eyes Without A Face (Japan 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

B. Front (Obi)

A. Front

“Eyes Without a Face” is a song by Billy Idol, co-written with guitarist Steve Stevens from Idol’s 1983 album Rebel Yell. The song is softer and more ballad-like than most of the album’s other singles.

Released on 29 May 1984, this was the second single from the Rebel Yell album. It reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Idol’s first Top 10 hit in the US. In the UK the single peaked at #18.

In the liner notes for the Expanded Edition of Rebel Yell, Idol notes that this song was one of the first three written for the album (the other two being the title track and “(Do Not) Stand In The Shadows.”) The original track was recorded in Studio A at Electric Lady Studios in New York, with a Linn drum machine and the bass parts played by Steve Webster.

The song is notable for the female voice of Perri Lister that sings ‘Les yeux sans visage’ (French for ‘eyes without a face’) as a background chorus.

The title of the song refers to French director Georges Franju’s movie Les yeux sans visage (1960).

In a retrospective review of the single, Allmusic journalist Donald A. Guarisco praised the song. He wrote: “The music plays against the dark tone of the lyrics with a ballad-styled melody comprised of yearning verses that slowly build emotion and a quietly wrenching chorus that relieves the emotional tension in a cathartic manner.

The left and right stereo channels of this recording are reversed from how they are in the video version and on the Idolize Yourself compilation:

Oh yes, I really wanted this LP digitalized!!!!
How strange a “long version” of this song doesn’t exist 😉
Any Billy Idol LP is more than welcome!
Thank you so much Paul!!!

Idol always had their songs well remixed.
EWAF is a delightful song. The end comes and leave a “want more”. Deserved a looong version 😉

In the Single version lacks these phrases:
“Hanging out by the State Line
Turning holy water into wine
Bringing it down, oh-oooo…”

Just looking at the comments, just to clarify the album version was some 50 seconds longer, so one asks why didn’t they put this this out on the 12″ ?

As for the remix options, an instrumental mix would of been nice..

In the UK the album version was indeed used & labelled as the ‘extended version’ (isn’t that annoying when they do that) certainly the best version with the extra verse etc

It was even included in 1988 (?) on the limited 15 of The Best version of Idol Songs – 11 of The Best, once again as the extended Version!

I’m still trying to figure out the need for the neon leg warmers on the back cover.

Yes, I love this music!
I heard a long time ago, an extended version of Eyes…, where the “punk rock part of the song” repeats. It’s all I remember.

Hugs!

Fantastic way to start the week Paul!!! Always loved this song but always lamented that there wasn’t a 12-inch version. I’d love to hear one that has the integrity of the original mix, just an extension. I don’t think any of the remix services did one; NOW that would be very cool.

Great song for October. I beleive that the movie, “Eyes Without A Face” was a disturbing horror film.

I can’t get into horror movies too much. I guess I’m a bit of a scaredy cat. haha oh well. I don’t mind silly 80s horror movies as much though. They can be funny and entertaining.
