BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1980
“Shakedown” is a song by Canadian new wave rock band Rough Trade centered on singer Carole Pope and multi-instrumentalist Kevan Staples. The band was noted for their provocative lyrics and stage antics; singer Pope often performed in bondage attire, and their 1981 hit “High School Confidential” was one of the first explicitly lesbian-themed Top 40 hits in the world..”Shakedown” was recorded exclusively for inclusion on the soundtrack for the 1980 psychological thriller Cruising directed by William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino. The single was only released in the Netherlands by Lorimar Records.
The b-side “When I Close My Eyes I See Blodd” recorded by Madelynn von Ritz is another track from the film’s soundtrack.
Since it’s release the highly controversial film along with it’s soundtrack have become cult classics.

I grew up only 20 minutes from the Peace Bridge to Canada. I was lucky enough to grow up listening to the mighty CFNY FM, Toronto. Rough Trade were local legends, and High School Confidential is still one of my all time favorites. Carole Pope sounds so gritty in it.. I remember the girls in school really did wear Tigress by Faberge! I don’t know if I know this track, but I’m looking forward to listening.
T H A N K Y O U !!!

I went to see Cruising with my parents when it was released way back when. Quite an evening for all three of us!
It isn’t until just now that I realized it actually had a soundtrack. Thank you so much for sharing. I was always a fan of Rough Trade and I appreciate this track very much.
VanceMan I can only imagine that must have been an interesting evening with your parents. I love the soundtrack very much great stuff 🙂
Thank You Paul!
Hear it for the first time.
Good song, smooth sound.

I see that you are doing some rips seventies.
Perhaps in the future to make you a request (via a donation) for the single released in 1977?
Meadows I am happy to take requests 🙂
Amazing post!! I love Rough Trade.. and the movie Cruising.
This has never been released on CD. Thanks for this fantastic rip! 🙂
You’re welcome Tony 🙂
Thanks Paul. Carole Pope is awesome. She sounds sort of like Grace Slick.
Yeah she does Omar. Have a nice weekend 🙂
Still not coming down from the high of yesterday’s posting (MASSIVE THANKS FOR THAT!!)I’m really happy to end up on this song Paul. It’s new for me and I’m pyched about it because I LOVE the new stuff (well, new to me) that you introduce. Your Burning The Ground site has so much to offer in the ways of excellent music. Paul, you just the tops!
Have a marvelous weekend and thanks again for all the Arthur Baker here (past and present postings),
Jeff
Hey, this posting got me thinking about the other great song from the soundtrack that you posted, “Lump” by Mutiny. I love the mix you made with the dialog introduction Paul. I have never seen the “Cruising” movie, but I really need to check it out.
Jeff
