Artist spotlight PSEUDO ECHO!
“Funkytown” is a song originally recorded by American disco-funk group Lipps Inc., released in 1980.
In 1986, “Funkytown” was covered by Australian new wave band Pseudo Echo in rock form, including a guitar solo in the middle. It reached number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 and spent seven weeks at number one in Australia. Like Lipps Inc., it is Pseudo Echo’s only US Top 40 hit single.
For the U.S. market, four exclusive promo-only remixes were commissioned by RCA Records and mixed by Chicago DJ/Producer Steve “Silk” Hurley, and New York City DJ/Producer Freddy Bastone, helping to push the single to #4 on the Billboard Dance Chart.

Thank you for your new Pseudo Echo transfers. I had purchased the 2-CD of Love An Adventure after hearing so many great rips of yours.
With Lipps, Inc. releasing “Funkytown” in 32 territories, charting #1 in 28 countries around the world, selling more than 35 million copies worldwide, I was always puzzled why we needed this mediocre retread less than a decade later that overshadowed their more original songs.
In equal parts of surprise and delight I came to these mixes! I love how you continually introduce us to twelves we’ve never heard before. Wow, Paul. Steve Hurley and Freddy Bastone are legends, so I am really excited about this record. Although I am more partial to the original dance mix of, “Funky Town”, I can appreciate these mixes as well. Again, Paul, I am most gracious to all you do for us in regard to “lost” mixes in the form of promo only pressings and other rarities that may come across your “hard stylus!” Thank you, immensely!!! Thanks for the Pseudo Echo Paul! I was led to this album because of the Funky Town cover but ended up enjoying the whole thing. Your posts made me wonder if there was a deluxe version of the album available and turns out there is! It has quite a few of these remixes on it so I went ahead and ordered it 🙂
Cheers!
there is but from what I have read many of the bonus mixes are taken from vinyl with some clicks and pops included.
They should hire you!
How did I not already have this set of remixes?!?! I’m not much of a disco fan, but I have always loved the original Funkytown and especially the Pseudo Echo cover, but I only had the normal extended version of the PE version. THANK YOU SO MUCH for yet another amazing piece of musical greatness in perfect quality!
Hi Paul, thank you so much for this one… i really love Steve Silk Hurley & Freddy Bastone early mixes, I wish I could record vinyls as good as you can..
Thank you, Xavier. I have been doing this for about fifteen years now so I have had my share of trial and error. Having people like you who appreciate music has helped me a lot. 🙂
I suppose it was unavoidable, Lol! Thank you for the meticulous new transfer, I think I missed it the first time around. While not at all representative of the band and their catalog, there is no denying its catchiness and just overall awesomeness! Happy to see you’re not done with the Pseudo Echo artist spotlight. Thank you Paul!!
You’re welcome, Retro Hound. I prefer the original “Dance Mix” as it is more faithful to their original recording. Sometimes House mixes sound a bit dated.
I’ve always considered “Funkytown”—with Lipps Inc on the one side and Pseudo Echo on the other—to be the bookends of the best era of popular music. I like a great deal of what came before and after the Funkytowns, but nearly everything between them.
Well put John, agreed!
I agree as well 🙂
