Burning The Ground Exclusive 1986
“Mountains” is a 1986 song by Prince and The Revolution, from the album Parade, the soundtrack to the film Under the Cherry Moon. It was written by The Revolution members Wendy & Lisa together with Prince. The extended 12″ single version of the song runs for nearly ten minutes.
It reached number 23 in the US but only 45 in the UK. The B-side was the instrumental “Alexa de Paris”, one of the few tracks from this project featuring a guitar solo. Both songs appear in the film Under the Cherry Moon, with the video for “Mountains” playing as the credits roll. The version shown on MTV to promote the single was in color as opposed to the film’s black-and-white version.

Thank you, PaulT.
This extended version is my favorite Prince track ever – I bought a UK 10″ edition of it on white vinyl on a whim back then ’cause I liked weird, novelty pressings and that qualified (even stranger, the label is also white with no text, so when it plays, it looks like the record isn’t moving). There was no way of knowing that the record contained such a spectacular jam for most of its running time, but it was a thrill to discover it. Thanks for this great rip.
OMG, this is amazing !!!
Thanks so much for posting this one DJPaulT!
You’re welcome, Grant 🙂
This is fantastic, we need more Prince on BTG. Be mindful your links are already on Prince forums. I don’t want this to impact your bandwidth as this is very expensive and you have worked hard to ensure the website is stable. Maybe Prince links should be live for a limited period or maybe they go onto free mega links so that your website is not impacted.
Thank you for the heads up. I have moved both links for 16 and 24 bit over to Mega. 🙂
Wow, thanks for this one! This is a fantastic 12″ single. I’ll admit I wasn’t overly impressed with the album when it was new, but when I revisited it in the ’90s, I found it to be up there with most of the rest of his ’80s output — excellent. I loved “Mountains” from the beginning, though, along with “Anotherloverholeinyohead.” I think the 12″ mixes had something to do with that; this “Mountains” extended mix takes a good song and makes it fantastic. Your rip also sounds about 1,000 times better than the rip I made of the 12″ back… Read more »
You’re welcome, David G. 🙂
WOW Thanks for posting this Paul.
Loved Prince And The Revolution, and “Mountains” is now one my favourites, the B-side “Alexa De Paris” is fantastic!
I only discovered this song around 8 years ago when watching the Prince film Under the Cherry Moon on DVD, “Mountains” played at the end credits and I liked it so much.
I eventually got the Prince Blu-ray boxset which includes this film.
Excellent Post!
Thank you, John I am happy you are enjoying this post 🙂
Like with the Madame X 12″…thanks so much for this 12″, Paul. I really like Mountains in it’s extendes version, better than the album mix. It’s time we get a superdeluxe edition of Parade with all the 12″ versions, B-Sides, Outtakes etc. The movie Under The Cherry Moon wasn’t, of course, the best movie ever, although it’s certainly not the worst movie ever made. At least it’s shot in black & white and I do love old b/w movies from the 1930s. At least the music’s better on Under The Cherry Moon than on old b/w movies. When Mountains was… Read more »
You’re welcome, Cooper Fanboy. Thank you for your comment 🙂
Oh yeah, now we’re talkin’! I look forward to enjoying this transfer. I LOVE how well it’s recorded and how the finger cymbals shimmer so clearly in the mix, I actually use this to gauge not only my humble audiophile system and loudspeakers, but also as a reference for headphones, earphones and test my hearing! Prince really, in song, captures the breathtaking feeling as if he’s and the listener, is amongst Mountains. Prince captures that so wonderfully in his lyrics, his vocal delivery, it’s just a tremendous song that really should have been a bigger hit at the time. One… Read more »
That was one thing I noticed while working on this record was how well it was recorded it sounds fantastic. I hope it makes your equipment shine 🙂
In my fond memory, most of Prince’s mixes were close or over 10 minutes. In actuality, as I recall, many of these super long mixes were not mixes at all but rather entirely different “takes” on the song…or…like Kiss the 1st half of the mix was the single and the 2nd half was just them jamming.
Thanks for the great post, Paul!
You’re welcome, Fred. I love an epic mix if it is done correctly 🙂
I’m over the (Cherry) Moon Paul!!! Thanks for bringing Prince (and the Revolution) back once again to Burning The Ground. His music is in your very capable hands to make it sound incredible!! Love this song and I almost forgot the flip-side with Sheila E on drums. You spoil us yet again with your talents for picking the hottest records! Where would we be without you and your ripping artistry? I never want to know. I — and this is probably too much information — but your ripping mastery really gets me off. I mean the quality and clarity of… Read more »

My favourite Prince single too! I don’t think he was too fond of it for whatever reason but I’ve always loved it. Thanks Paul!
