Burning The Ground Exclusive 1987
NEW 2023 Transfer
NEW Meticulous Audio restoration
Originally posted November 18, 2016
“In the Night” is a song by UK duo Pet Shop Boys, about the subculture known as the Zazous, which appeared in France during the German occupation of France in World War II; concerned with fashion and music, and allied with neither the Nazis and Vichy France nor the French Resistance, they were distrusted by both sides. Neil Tennant, having read about the movement in a book by David Pryce-Jones, asks, in the song, the question of whether this apathy essentially amounted to collaborationism.
The song was scheduled to be released as a single in Germany on March 4, 1987, but was withdrawn with only a 7″ promo being issued. The Artur Baker 7″ edit is exclusive to this release and has never appeared on CD to the best of my knowledge. The full Arthur Baker mix appeared on the album “DISCO”.
The same mix appears on both sides.

I never knew this edit existed. Thanks Paul.
Thank you so much for this one! A perfect addition to the PSB singles discography – a unique edit with slightly different mix to the longer remix (especially the intro). Was just hoping to find a good rip of this!
Simply amazing! Thank you for another super rare 7″ remix! And on top of that, from one of my all-time favorite bands … and one of their best songs! After Pride month, I hope you can squeeze in a few more rare 7″ remixes! Excellent share as always!
Your 7″ will be the perfect way to complete this great set: Pet Shop Boys / Smash: The Singles 1985-2020 https://superdeluxeedition.com/news/pet-shop-boys-smash-the-singles-1985-2020/
Hey Paul, it is astonishing how many excellent b-sides the Boys produced. “In The Night” is one of many, many, although I am not a fan of this edit. Quite roughly cut but never mind. It´s a great song anyway. For those interested: take a look at the 2012 double cd “Format” offering 38 b-sides. I love that compilation album.”Betrayed” and “Always” certainly are in my PSB top 20 of all their songs.
Btw, have a great weekend. You too, dear Jeff, and every music lover around here. 🙂
Thanks!
You’re welcome, Steven 🙂
Thanks Paul!
You’re welcome, Muff Diver 🙂
hi djpaul,
wow, one of my all time favorites songs from the pet shop boys.
i first heard the ‘disco’ version, which i think is the best one.
but the single version, and original ones are pretty cool too.
i wish it had more recognition, and mixes. but it was a b-side
for opportunities.
thanks for the great rip, and all your hard work.

Hi, Paul!
There is a rare Parlophone CDr promo of “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots Of Money) (Pre-Release)” that contains this 7″ mix of “In The Night.” Cheers!
Its just a fan made CDr using a rip from vinyl – they cam from Ukraine – it wasn’t issued by PSB or Parlophone
So many glorious 7″ers! Thank you Paul. It’s like Christmas for me. I’m in the middle of moving so hopefully I will be able to grab them all you post them.
You’re welcome, Conner good luck with your move 🙂
\Wow, this is mega rare Paul. Thank u so much.
You’re welcome, Gilbert 🙂
Such a classic.
I’m pleased this has been re-visited.
I’m curious to compare this new transfer with the previous one you posted in 2016 !
Thanks for taking care of the Boys 🙂
You’re welcome 🙂
Simply Fantastic ! This is typically the kind of jewel every PSB fan is looking for… So big thanks for this rarity !
You’re welcome 🙂
Paul, you’re the man of “seven inches” this week and I’m loving this!! And you can’t go wrong with an Arthur Baker mix!!! I love this song’s production. To me, I really get a charge out of the Pet Shop Boys whenever they take on genres that have those frenetic nervous beats, like in Latin Hip Hop or Electro. Sure, I love the four-on-the-floor beats, but it’s this beat mongering crazed energy that stimulates my mind and body!! Thanks for a “well-hung” week of tremendous singles!! I hope you have a fabulous weekend, Paul!! Same goes for you, Song And… Read more »
