Pat Wilson – Bop Girl (Australia 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

“Bop Girl” is the debut single by Australian pop singer Pat Wilson. The song was written by her husband, Ross Wilson of the bands Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock. “Bop Girl” was released in September 1983. It peaked at number 2 on the Australian Kent Music Report. At the 1983 Countdown Music Awards, the song won the award for ‘Best Debut Single’.

The music video was the screen debut of 15-year-old Nicole Kidman playing the role of a young “bop girl”. Chosen by director Gillian Armstrong, songwriter Ross recalled that Kidman was to represent “an up and coming starlet with a bright future”. Kidman herself insisted that the video be used for both a BBC documentary about her career, and also in an American Cinematheque tribute, with the result that the video returned to Australian music video playlists in 2004. The music video was shot in South Coogee.

BINGO! Love this one.
Now for your next search for lost campy early 80s hits – Christie Allen “He’s My Number One” — and GO! (just kidding, but I’d love it if you found it).

Paul! I almost fainted. Haven´t heard this in AGES. What a good-mood song. Makes you wanna bop along, doesn´t it? I couldn´t resist downloading the video. My goodness, Ms Kidman was so young back then. Well, weren´t we all? 🙂 Great song, Paul. I had forgotten about it all along but never will again. She´s A Bop Girl, She´s A Bop She´s A Bop Bop Girl. 🙂 LOVE IT.

Been looking on this for ages. Very popular in the Philippines in the early 80s. Hard to find digitally. Thanx DJ Paul for yet another masterpiece.

This is certainly one of my obsessions Paul!! I have loved this song for years and to know that Nicole Kidman is in the video was the icing on the sonic cake!! It is truly an earworm that gets into your head and body. Just now, I’m singing it in my brain. This was so quirky and when I introduced it to Karen we both became “bop girls.” Ah, that didn’t sound right, but you get the picture. Many thanks for a beloved song.

You make me so happy with all the music you post. I love it when you so happen to hit upon a favorite of mine. This track is so fun and I am indebted to you because I can’t find it anywhere. Just like how you pulled the same feat with The Puppet’s “The Way of Life” which was a single I was so desperate to have. You perform so many special miracles Paul and I can’t thank you enough. Especially in this season of Thanksgiving, it’s very important for me to count my blessings and you always offer a… Read more »
