Eurythmics – Julia (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

R E Q U E S T

“Julia” is a song performed by British pop duo Eurythmics. It was written by group members Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart for their album 1984 (For the Love of Big Brother), which served as the soundtrack to the film 1984, an adaptation of the political novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. The song was produced by Stewart and was the second and final single released from the album.

The song is a ballad with very sparse electronic instrumentation and an almost a cappella performance by Lennox. Her vocals are accentuated by vocoder effects in the background. The title and lyrics of the song are based upon the novel’s heroine and love interest, Julia. The cover artwork for the single is a still image from the film, featuring English actress Suzanna Hamilton as Julia.

Midway through the song, an instrumental line based on J. S. Bach’s “Fugue #2 in C Minor” from The Well Tempered Clavier, Book 1, can be heard. Breaking a string of six consecutive Top 10 hits, “Julia” peaked at number 44 on the UK singles chart.

The version of “Julia” found on the soundtrack differs from the one being played during the end-credits of the film – which is more string based with less synthetic arrangements. This is also the case for many of the other songs on the soundtrack versus their version used in the film.

Donna Summer – Donna Summer Mega-Mixx (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE

DONNA SUMMER “THE QUEEN OF DISCO”! Her list of hit records seems endless. She was directly responsible for the success of Casablanca Records one of the major disco labels in the 70’s.

Five time Grammy winner Donna Summer was the first artist to have 3 Consecutive #1 double-disc albums on the US pop charts !!! This ultra rare nearly 15 minute mega-mixx showcases some of her biggest hits of the 70’s and 80’s.

This 12″ was only circulated to DJs and radio personnel in limited quantities by the now defunct US based remix service Mega-Mixx Industries Ltd. The year of release is unknown but probably in the late 80’s or early 90’s.

*Please Note: This is not an officially released single therefore the vinyl mastering may not be perfect. However I have made every attempt to restore this rare gem. In addition I have also included custom artwork and a scan of the record label.

Bronski Beat with Marc Almond – I Feel Love (UK 10″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

In 1985, Bronski Beat joined up with Marc Almond to record a version of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”. The full version was actually a medley, also incorporating snippets of Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby” and John Leyton’s “Johnny Remember Me”. It was a success, reaching #3 in the UK, equalling the chart achievement of “Smalltown Boy”. Although the original had been one of Marc Almond’s all-time favourite songs, he had never read the lyrics and thus incorrectly sang “What’ll it be, what’ll it be, you and me” instead of “Falling free, falling free, falling free”.

“I Feel Love (Medley)” peaked at #3 in Ireland and at #21 on the Belgian VRT Top 30. On the U.S. Hot Dance Singles Sales, the single reached #50.
