Donna Summer – Hot Stuff (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1979

“Hot Stuff” is a hit single released by American singer Donna Summer in 1979 as the first single release from her Bad Girls album through Casablanca Records. Up to that point, Summer had mainly been associated with disco songs but this song also showed significant rock influences including a guitar solo by ex-Doobie Brother and Steely Dan guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. It is her most popular song, based on the performance on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Hot Stuff” won Summer the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, making her not only the first African-American artist to achieve that feat, but also the first woman to ever win a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance. It is ranked #104 on the updated Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”. The song also lists at #67 on Billboard’s Greatest Songs of all time.

“Hot Stuff” was certified Platinum by the RIAA and remained at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three non-consecutive weeks. The song also lists at #67 on Billboard’s Greatest Songs of all time. The song also topped the US Hot Dance Club Play chart. This limited edition UK 12″ was pressed on sexy red vinyl and plays the full 6:45 version of “Hot Stuff” with the album track “Journey To The Center Of Your Heart” as the b-side.

The only way The Record “Biz” could ever try to Re-pay what Donna’s Owed
Is simple
Bucket-Loads of Extra Tracks on Re-Issue LP’s etc or little things like the Donna + Bruce Springsteen “Duet’
Get an Official Release – And any other Gems hiding in the Vaults
Cover Me was written 4 Donna !
the 2 CD Deluxe + with a ‘little bit’ of THOUGHT BEHIND THEM = treatment seems to be every where
On – never mind arguements over ‘lesser Artists’ = Sum RAWK gets Fawned over = Even ‘Intelectual-ised’
DISCO is no lesser an Art Form

Hey Paul —

Is there any chance we could get the 12″ version of “She Works Hard For The Money” as well with perhaps the instumental as a bonus? Here’s hopin’. Thanks much.

Disco sure got the short end of the music deal in that Hall. If so many New Wave acts can get inducted, why not Donna?
The committee, by agreeing to induct Donna only now, comes across as giving Donna a “sorry” or “pity” vote, and it is such an insult to the Queen Of Disco.
Thank goodness Donna’s legacy does not depend on them, and we fans can carry it well, and especially with your series of Donna posts, Paul.
Thanks!

Hi Paul + Ric I personally hate the title Queen of Disco To me it implies an air of That all she could Do It’s like Ya Got One Black Woman ‘Rock’ star be happy Why ? Oh Colour again – Donna wasn’t allowed to move beyond that millstone I don’t hear skin colour but I think theres a few Music Exec’s who do And it’s just proof of how Racist the US of A can be like Why ? was Bruce Springsteen’s voice scrubbed from ‘Protection’ Higher Love was another example where a Duet somehow wasn’t allowed Aaah Queen… Read more »

Hello Ric,

My thoughts exactly. I was thinking about that while writing my previous comment. I would not be upset if the Sudano family refuses the award and boycott the ceremony altogether just because of the fact that it is being given by an institution that strongly lacks voting integrity and a true appreciation of art. They should keep their “pity” award and continue inducting 2nd rate talent, because they do it so well. Donna deserves to be somewhere with “better class”.

WOW Paul, I have this 12 inch in my collection, now I can listen to it in fine, high quality. Shame on the Rock n’Roll Music Hall Of Fame for nominating Donna for induction a few times and then overlooking her, I think mostly because of the “DISCO BOX” those stupid rock heads placed her in and then threw away the key. If they had bothered to take real notice of her achievements in the field, instead of being ignorant, they would have recognized her as the versatile artist she was as far back as 1979, when she won the… Read more »

Hi Paul, May I be the 16th [lol] to say “WAY TO GO SUNSHINE !” I got a a VERY nice response on facebook thanks to a Letter of Remembrance I wrote about Donna Summer on Giorgio Moroder’s facebook page + hi Richard ! I agree totally What Bugs Me about ‘certain’ current ‘Pap Stars’ is that they get Uber press coverage because of all the internet ‘hits’ and the ‘huge’ amount of Singles + Abums they have sold- but its all Downloads for there ‘record [sic] breaking Sales’ Would half of todays Singers be so popular if like in… Read more »
