“Hot You’re Cool” is a 1985 single released on I.R.S. Records by English new wave band, formed in Birmingham General Public. The song was the fifth and final single from the band’s 1984 debut LP “All The Rage”. “Hot You’re Cool” reached #16 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Chart on June 22, 1985, spending nine weeks on the survey. The record did not chart in the UK.

A music video was not released for this single.

“Sister Christian” is a song by the American rock band Night Ranger. A power ballad, it was released in March 1984 as the second single from their album Midnight Madness. It was ranked No. 32 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 1980s. It was written and sung by the band’s drummer, Kelly Keagy, for his sister. It was the band’s biggest hit, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, and staying on the charts for 24 weeks. It also reached No. 1 in Canada. The song is used in several films, including Boogie Nights (1997), Superstar (1999), Friday the 13th (2009) and Ben Affleck’s 2023 film Air (2023).

“Sister Christian” was inspired by Keagy’s younger sister, Christy. Upon returning from a visit to his hometown of Eugene, Oregon, Keagy wrote the song at his San Francisco apartment after being astonished at the speed at which his sister was growing up.

Keagy later recalled that “after we started playing it a lot, Jack turned to me and said, ‘what exactly are you saying?,'” adding that bandmate Jack Blades “thought the words were Sister Christian, instead of Sister Christy, so it just stuck.”

The meaning of the lyric, “You’re motoring. What’s your price for flight? In finding Mr. Right?” has generated significant attention and debate. In a VH-1 Behind the Music interview, the band stated that the term “motoring” should be interpreted to mean “cruising”.

Differences between album version and 7″ single version

On the single version, part of the second chorus is omitted. More specifically, the words “You’ve got him in your sight. And driving through the night,” are omitted from the single version. The third chorus is repeated once on the album version, but never on the single.

The music video (which uses the shorter single version) was filmed within San Rafael High School.

Exile – How Could This Go Wrong (US 12″)

“How Could This Go Wrong” is a 1979 song performed by the American group Exile. Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn wrote it. The song was included on the band’s fourth studio album All There Is, and it was the first of three singles released from the LP. After spending only two weeks on the survey, the song reached #88 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on April 29, 1979. In the U.K. the song reached #46. “How Could This Go Wrong” also charted in Australia #68, and New Zealand #67.

The pop and country music group, formed in Richmond, Kentucky, in 1963 as the Exiles. They toured with Dick Clark Caravan of Stars from 1965 to 1968. In 1972 they changed their name to Exile. In 1978 they had a US #1 pop hit with “Kiss You All Over”. They evolved into country music in 1983 with many subsequent country chart hits.

The “Disco Mix” is only available on this U.S. 12″.

Pet Shop Boys – Jealousy (UK 12″)

“Jealousy” is a song originally written in 1982 by English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, recorded for their fourth studio album, Behaviour (1990). It was released on 27 May 1991 as the album’s fourth and final single. The song reached #12 on the UK singles chart.

Neil Tennant states that “Jealousy” is the first proper song ever composed by the duo. Chris Lowe composed the melody at the piano in his parents’ home and, as he felt it should be a ballad, asked Tennant to write an intense-sounding lyric. Tennant complied by writing a lyric about the simplest form of jealousy: infidelity suspicions aroused by someone’s indifferent or disrespectful attitudes towards another person’s feelings (such as making his/her partner wait all night for a phone call that never comes). The song was then left off three albums because the duo were waiting for legendary film composer Ennio Morricone to agree to score the orchestral arrangement for the song. Morricone’s answer never came, and Harold Faltermeyer ended up doing the arrangement for the song’s release on Behaviour.

The album version, coming at the end of Behaviour, closed off the album with a sampler-based orchestral outro. The single version is slightly remixed and uses a real orchestra instead during the outro. The extended version of the single version lengthens the outro while adding an orchestral intro as well; in addition, Neil Tennant recites a quote from William Shakespeare’s Othello (Act III, Scene III) over both sequences:

Not poppy, nor mandragora,
Nor all the drowsy syrups of the world,
Shall ever medicine thee to that sweet sleep
Which thou owedst yesterday.

The B-side “Losing My Mind”, taken from the Stephen Sondheim musical Follies, was based on a demo originally recorded as a proposal for the Liza Minnelli album Results. Its release here follows the releases of Minnelli’s version on both Results and as the lead single from the album. As with the A-side, “Losing My Mind” was released in an extended mix (the “Disco mix”) on the 12-inch single which was recorded in 1988-89.
