Burning The Ground Exclusive 1989
When researching songs that I wanted to include for PRIDE Month I wanted to step outside of the box because PRIDE music is not just Disco or Divas there are also many other genres to seek out including EBM/Industrial music which was quite popular in the mid-late 80’s a homoerotic militaristic style of dance music which was a leather scene favorite. It was subversively left-wing beneath its macho surface. Bands like Nitzer Ebb tapped into this subgenre.
“Control I’m Here” was the first single released by British EBM project Nitzer Ebb taken from their second and upcoming studio album “Belief”. It reached #100 in the UK Single Chart, and #14 on the US Billboard Dance Chart. the single was co-produced by Post-punk record producer and DJ, Flood (Mark Ellis) known for his work with A-ha, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Nine Inch Nails, U2, and many other bands.

I have a lot of NE, but somehow don’t have this. You are doing important work and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
Thanks for sharing this! I still have the mini CD3 single from ’88, but it didn’t include the Command Control Confront Mix, so I’ve never heard that version before! Also so glad to hear some pride music represented that isn’t just the usual 70s disco and 90s diva technopop! Many of our industrial/EBM heroes were LGBTQIA+ and our “industrial nights” were often hosted in gay clubs in the 80s and 90s, so there is a strong connection between rivethead and queer culture. Thanks for always keeping things fresh with your selection. Got any rare vinyl versions of Psychic TV’s “Godstar”?… Read more »
I totally get what you mean with regard to Pride Month and Industrial music. I used to spin in a club in the 90s. On Wednesdays, it was alternative night, where I mostly played Synthpop, EBM, Goth and Industrial. That club quickly became known as a “gay club”, even though it wasn’t, just based on the music and the “alternative” clothing style … lol … It was the smallest club I played at (only 600 people capacity), but I used to love playing there, because everybody knew each other. All the “alternative” people hung out there: Punks, Ravers, Queers, Goths,… Read more »
Funny, I just saw them perform live a few weeks ago, unfortunately without Douglas McCarthy (who is apparently very sick). Vaughan “Bon” Harris took over vocal duties and sounded amazing and Daniel Myer Haujobb) filled in for Bon. It was awesome!
Wow! It sounds it was sweaty and amazing lol 🙂
106 Degrees Heat Index outdoors in the middle of the day in Florida … and yet everyone was dancing … and shouting: Lies, lies, lies, lies, gold, gold, gold, gold, guns, guns, guns, guns, fire, fire, fire
and of course, Bon was wearing leather … lol
Sounds amazing.
OMG!!! I am envious!!
Jeff
This is just one of the reasons I love you so much, Paul!!! The diversity of your site is monumental!! I am an extreme fanatic for Industrial music. While many of friends and peers in the 1980’3 were into Heavy Metal music, I found sanctuary within the Industrial and EBM genres. This music was unbelievable to my ears and body. It dripped with testosterone and a heightened sexuality that I loved!!! So uber-masculine. Music of muscle and waxed chest hair and genital tumescence!! It was an “aural aphrodisiac” for me personally. I saturated myself in this militaristic beat-oriented music. Ooh!!… Read more »
Wow! Great description Jeff, but isn’t it a little early in the day? Your ‘tumescence is dripping’ from watching that video. Maybe take a cold shower dide! 😂

DJ XREY!!!!
Next to Paul posting this record, your response made my week!!
Jeff
lol … you are too funny, Jeff … and I wholeheartedly agree. Even though it turned out that many gay men were unsurprisingly hiding behind those leather-clad heavy metal macho men, e.g. Rob Halford from Judas Priest.
Industrial Music, especially early EBM/Industrial artists perfectly fused the powerful energy of heavy metal with the danceability of techno and house music. I still regularly listen to bands like Front 242, KMFDM, etc.
Martika!! I love that you follow, Burning The Ground, because of your passion for the music Paul posts, and your astute insights into the genres that are here!! I so appreciate your observations and your interests!! You’re fantastic!!
Have a great day!!
Jeff
Right back atcha! I love this site not only for the perfect vinyl rips, but also for Paul’s descriptions as well as everyone’s comments! It’s quite an amazing community and it would be nothing without you, Jeff!
You’re welcome, Jeff. you know me I love to tread off the beaten path sometimes. 🙂
Amazing Jeff! Your passion alone can get anyone feeling ‘euphoric’! I want to add my two cents and agree with you in terms of outside the box… I’m a rock guy, but I appreciate Paul you putting in the research to go beyond the discos and divas (not that there’s anything wrong with them). So looking forward to what you have in store for us throughout this month!
Retro Hound,
I love you around here!! You have splendid tastes in music, and you still can appreciate other forms. I love that you are the rock guy here, plus your passions are contagious!!
Have a great day and weekend, pal!!
Jeff
Thanks Jeff!! Appreciate that. This place wouldn’t be the same without you, that’s for sure. Enjoy your Saturday and the rest of the weekend!
This brings back fond memories of alternative dance Mars-FM 103.1 in the L.A./O.C. area, the first station to play Nirvana here.back when legendary Freddy Snakeskin was PD.
Thanks Paul, and be safe during the violent storms pounding your part of the country. Happy Pride Month!🏳️🌈
Thank you DJ XRey. Today is the first day in a while without storms. Happy Pride Month.
