BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984
“She Bop” is a song by American singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper, released as the third single from her debut studio album She’s So Unusual. It reached number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in September 1984. Worldwide, the song is her most commercially successful single after “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “Time After Time”, and reached number 46 on the UK Singles Chart and number 6 on the ARIA Singles Chart. “She Bop” was her third consecutive Top 5 on the Hot 100.
The song was considered controversial, as it dealt with the subject matter of masturbation. It was also included on the Parents Music Resource Center’s “Filthy Fifteen” list, due to its sexual lyrics; this led to the creation of the Parental Advisory sticker. (Other songs on the “Filthy Fifteen” list included tracks by Madonna, Prince, and AC/DC.) In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Lauper stated that she recorded the vocals of the song while nude.
Lauper said she wanted little kids to think the song was about dancing, and to understand the real meaning as they got older. It could receive airplay as she never directly stated in the song what the meaning was.
Lauper stated at a concert during her 2013 She’s So Unusual anniversary tour that she recorded the song topless in a dark room and tickled herself under her arms, which is why there is her laughter on the track.
“She Bop” was released on July 2, 1984 and became a success. The single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #52 in the issue dated July 21, 1984, and spent a total of twenty-five weeks on the chart, reaching a peak position of #3 in the issue dated September 8, 1984. It was the third single from Lauper’s debut album to make the top 10 of the Hot 100. The single also reached number ten on the Hot Dance/Club Play Songs chart the week of September 15, 1984 and placed at 34 on the Billboard year-end chart of 1984. On April 17, 1989, the song was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for the shipment of a million copies across the United States.

I never head the 12″. Thanks for sharing it.
Superb song from Cyndi! Thanks for the posting!
Thank you for this. It is my favorite of all of her work. And it brings back memories of a time in the 80’s that was pretty okay.
Completely oblivious to the real meanig of it. LOL!
One of Cyndi’s best pop work and just provided us with some of the most rarest vinyl covers. I’m really enjoying not only the pristine sound but also the artwork. Thank you Dj PaulT! 🙂
I second that. Thank you Paul.
Thank you Paul! Cyndi is the best. Classic 80’s pop that defies time. Still sounds good, real good.
Easy guess for me what you gonna post today, the Girls always wanna have fun with She Bop!
Only thing, I always thought the song is about dancing LOL ! As a not-native English speaker, the more forward hilariously funny ”I want some pussy” and ”Dick Almighty” by the 2 Live Crew where much more easy to understand! But unbeatable is the full 10 min
instrumental version of the house classic French Kiss by Lil Louise! That was real fun spinnin’ it for the 1st time to a clueless crowd in a club 🙂
Phew Paul!1 Absolutely KILLER Instrumental/dub mix. All about the beats and the boppin’!! You have quite the Arthur Baker discography on your site and I can’t thank you enough for that!! So much of what you present hasn’t made it to compact disc or digital so I am on the ground bowing to your GOD-NESS!! I am swooning and in a bopped-out body bliss! Thank you for this “aural SEX!!”
Hyper-ventilating!!!
Jeff
I was always hoping that you would someday get to Cyndi’s “She Bop” dance mix Paul! I almost wanted to send you my copy in the hopes that maybe you’d post it. It’s like you read my mind and thus answered my prayers. I loved this dance mix more than Arthur Baker’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” mix, because I thought it kicked serious ass! Love how the song climaxes with the body spasms of the word BOP!! Mr. Baker really got to the meaning of the single with his creative mix. Thank you so much Paul. Funny, how… Read more »
Hi Paul,
Great Cyndi posts – love them. I am always baffled that no 12″ mixes were ever released for the singles from her “A Night To Remember” album. I know that album was not very successful compared to her first two albums, but “I Drove All Night” was a big hit, yet no 12″ remix ever surfaced.
Thanks again!
MusicMan3
I’ve always loved the 12″ mix…really great mixing for its time (and not just the sampling). I never knew (but always hoped) there was an instrumental to the 12″ mix!!! Thanks so much it sounds fantastic!
Bless your heart Paul! Thanks so much 🙂
Awesome song loved this since release. I wonder how many songs are around with this subject matter, lol. I can name a further two. Divinyls: I touch myself and Gary Numan: Everyday i die. Oh and there’s always the title of the last James’ album, the awesome La petite mort!
Who can forget The Vapor’s “Turning Japanese” single?
Jeff
Excellent!!! Thank you Paul.
Wow, Paul another great track !
is it possible also to have a 2015 re-rip of “Change of heart” ?
– Shep forever – (with DjPaul too)
One of the 2 different instrumentals available for this song.
One ending with the 7″ version instrumental and the other ending with a lot of sampling.
So what release is the other instrumental available on?
supposedly there is a 6:30 version of the instrumental: http://www.discogs.com/Cyndi-Lauper-She-Bop-Special-Dance-Mix/release/192317
I think that other “dub” version is on the European version of the 12″. Although i love this ending more, the other one is fun to listen to. I’ve ripped the one myself, but ofcourse it’s nowhere near the quality of all your rips Paul. That you again so very much. I’ve been a big Cyndi fan, so it’s great to finally have all the dubs and intrumentals from the Original 12″ singles. You’re the best!!
One of my favorite Cyndi singles. Thanks Paul.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
Oooh, I feel a new series coming up 🙂
Excellent follow up to Girls. And thanks that I now have the instrumental too!
I’ve pretty much posted all of my Cyndi singles. I have one more but probably won’t have it ready until next week 🙂
Wow! That was quick. Just discovered the “Girls just wanna have fun” post and read the comments where someone asked for the Japan release of “She Bop” and here it is. Both are excellent posts and wonderfully presented in their glorious picture/lyric sleeves. I have both 12 inches but the sleeves are pretty boring. Thanks a lot Paul for offering these, you always seen to go a step ahead to find the best. Well done.
Thank you Richard. Enjoy!
