New Order – Temptation (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

A. Front

“Temptation” was British band New Order’s 4th, and their first self-produced single. Released on May 10, 1982 as 7″ and 12″. “Temptation” peaked at # 29 of the UK singles charts.

The vocal track on the original 12″ version features an audible “startled yelp” during the song’s intro. Vocalist Bernard Sumner has since explained that the scream was from him due to bandmates thrusting a snowball down his shirt during recording.

Thank you for New Order!
@Jeff: you’re right about Bernard Sumner, yet I love his voice, it’s good enough in the studio but listening to live concerts reveals the limitations of his voice.
Still, I’m a huge fan and love his singing voice 🙂

Thanks for sharing this one. I really like the original raw feel of this one. Excellent job as usual.

Man, you’re on a roll these days. To quote Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen…: thank you ever so.
In my opinion the 7″ is better. No fade-in, thus more effective.

Another in my Top 10 of all time. And it has to be the original 12-inch version.

It’s like you’re reading my mind.

Thanks, Paul.

Great. I think it’d be only right to do ‘Blue Monday’ some BTG justice as the biggest selling 12 of all time. No expert on this has the a and b sides of the 12″ ever been done decently on CD?

The B side of Blue Monday, called The Beach, which actually is not an instrumental
but a dub mix version of Blue Monday, a genius version in itself, can be found in excellent sound quality on the CD release of Substance compilation.

Yes i do have ‘Substance’ of course on CD. Just couldn’t be bothered to look. Plus i am no good on deciding whether of not a version on CD is a good rip or bad rip. I leave it to the experts!

The mastering on Substance is superb, full dynamics preserved. Nowadays the mastering on 80s compilations and remastered albums with bonus content from that time, mostly is brick-walled, loud as possible, with a wider stereo field,
resulting in a doubtful sound quality.

Good to know regarding ‘Substance’. Fortunately the mastering is getting a little better again to some degree. Of course the NO remasters were slaughtered!

Actually, the UK 12″ [white sleeve] of “Getting Away With It” contains one vinyl only exclusive, entitled “original version” which is longer and does not contain the Ann Dudley orchestration, as far as I know it does not appear digitally anywhere.

Oh how I adore these single artist runs you present to us on occasion Paul. All the time you invest and always the coolest releases shows your commitment to making us happy. I just love New Order so much. I’m sad that Bernard Summer and Peter Hook don’t get along now, but they’ve left us with their legacy of fabulous singles. And now we have them under your exquisite sonic rips. I really would love for you to be chosen to work on artist re-issues. You really care and show great respect to the material. Thank you ever so much… Read more »

They will work together again one day, I’m sure of it.
They both talk jokingly about the fall out in interviews.

Thanks Jermajesty, I certainly hope so. Bernard really doesn’t have the best voice, but somehow, it works. At least he doesn’t use auto-tune. I respect his signature vocal style.

Cool, more NO! – Thanks Paul. 🙂

You gonna make it a full New Order week??
Maybe that exclusive mix of Sub-Culture, if you’ve not already chosen something? 🙂
