Miami Sound Machine – Bad Boy (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

A. Front

“Bad Boy” was the second single released by the American band Miami Sound Machine led by Gloria Estefan on their second English language album, and ninth overall, Primitive Love. The song enjoyed much success following up on the band’s mainstream breakthrough single, “Conga”.

The radio release and single was an edited and remixed version of the original album cut. It was remixed by Shep Pettibone. “Bad Boy” became the band’s second Top Ten single in the United States, peaking at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached the Top 20 in many other countries around the world. The single was certified Gold by the RIAA in the U.S. for sales of 500,000 units and by the ARIA in Australia for sales of 35,000 copies. The song landed at #79 on Billboard magazine’s year-end chart of 1986.

The video of the song received high rotation on MTV and other video music channels. Two videos were made with the second one featuring Estefan with the cast of the musical Cats. The song opened the film, Three Men and a Baby.

Wow, I guess I got to this one a little too late. You know like when you’re hungry for something at a certain hour but the only restaurant that makes it is closed? The song was in my head so I came here looking, only to find it not available. So frustrating…

Thanks for this Paul – an out and out classic. I remember getting the ‘Homecoming Concert’ on video back in the day and loving ‘Bad Boy’ after hearing it on there. The 12″ I have has the (also excellent) Pablo Flores mix on it so look forward to hearing this one!

I was thinking the other day how in today’s music industry and popular music scene, a band, out of Miami, made solely out of Cuban Americans wouldn’t even be given a chance today. The 80s seem even more open to so many new genre’s from early hip hop, British New Wave, American New Wave, Electro Funk, Latin HiEnergy, etc. etc. etc. I lamented at not seeing any more Cuban and even Puerto Rican based dance music, pop music in today’s music scene. There’s just no happy songs. And no, that one “happy” song doesn’t cut it. This, is just the… Read more »

Amazing quality sound, Paul. I love listening to the acapella in the Dub. For me, all Dub versions should be like this one, where they stay true to the original, but play around, break it down, etc. Thanks!

I love this!!!! I’ve been blasting Gloria Estefan’s ‘gloria’ album from 1998 and this is a fantastic addition! <3 I have been looking for the blue vinyl of the 1998 album, I hope to be able to find it one day. Thank you for this, Paul!

Thank you so much for this. I have a twelve” version of this but it is 6:24 so thinking this is a different remix.

6:24 would be the Pablo Flores mix, which is closer to the album version. I like Pablo’s version but I LOVE Shep’s!
