“Respectable” is a Mel and Kim song written and produced by Stock/Aitken/Waterman that became a UK number one single for one week in March 1987. It was the second UK number one single produced by Stock/Aitken/Waterman, following Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” in 1985, and the first UK number one single that Stock/Aitken/Waterman had written themselves. The single also topped the charts in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Australia and New Zealan in 1987. The single was also a #1 dance hit in the United States.

I can’t believe while I’ve been offline my all-time eighties favourite has been uploaded!!! Interesting to hear that some of the songs on the FLM album were written for DOA… to be quite honest, I really can’t imagine Pete Burns recording any of the FLM tracks. Bought this when it came out! Didn’t realise it got to number one though. I think it’s one of the few SAW written tracks that still stands up without relying too much on the kitsch/camp/novelty factor. The Kylie/Jason/Astley output that followed have none of the integrity found in this track.
I agree with you Jermajesty. This one and “You Spin Me Round” by Dead Or Alive are the only two SAW singles to reach #1.
In a twist of irony, (the Alanis Morrisette kind of irony, probably), “Respectable” and several other songs on Mel & Kim’s FLM album were written by SAW for Dead Or Alive’s “Nude” album. Pete Burns hated the songs (or, at least the idea of singing someone else’s songs) so much he fired SAW and he & Dead Or Alive produced the album on their own.
Very interesting David. I would have loved to hear DOS do this track and the others. While I was recording this 12″ I thought it sounded a lot like something on the “Nude” album. Thanks for letting me know something that I had no clue about.

It always amuses me when music is described as “Garage House” to distinguish it from “UK Garage”, or even “Garage Rock”. I know what you mean by this phrase, but when I was younger “Garage House” was just “Garage”, & “House” was just that, “House”, being named after their respective styles, originating from their respective locations, namely, the “Warehouse” & the “Paradise Garage”… So why don’t people call it “Paradise Garage” ???
