M|A|R|R|S – Pump Up The Volume (Remix) (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

“Pump Up the Volume” is the only single by British recording act M|A|R|R|S. Recorded and released in 1987. In Europe a second 12″ single was released featuring a “Remix”. This remix became the best-known version of the track, transforming it by the addition of numerous samples which provided the record with additional hooks besides its oft-repeated title chant, such as samples of tracks by Public Enemy, Criminal Element Orchestra and the Bar-Kays being used. It was this remix, rather than the original, that was edited down to create the 7-inch version of the track, which began picking up radio play.

The single reached #1 on the U.K. singles chart.

An absolute classic of the highest order. Replaced my vinyl with CDs, but miss the brilliant 23 Envelope sleeves. Thanks for the exceptional scans, Paul.

I have to say that I always liked the USA versions/mixes far better than the UK mixes/versions…mainly because I found the samples to be different…not different words, but actually different samples of the SAME WORDS. If you spin up the US and UK versions of this classic, you will hear the relatively same placement of samples, yet the samples are different people/groups that was the sample. An example of what I am talking about it is: 7:12 USA mix at 2:05 (Do it do it!) vs. 6:27 UK Remix at 1:41 (Do it do it!) and 3:20 on the USA… Read more »

As a massive Colourbox fan I found this to be rather curious and dare I say a bit commercial, although loved what 4AD were doing music-wise at the time (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, Throwing Muses). Loved just as much the beautiful artwork courtesy of 23 Envelope (was planning to do my college work-experience with them back in ’88, but finances wouldn’t allow – always regret that!).

Just wanted to mention that in a year of many music related deaths, Steven Young died on 13 July 2016, he was a founding member of Colourbox and this collaboration they did with AR Kane.

Thank you for this and the US version! I have the Australian 12″ (unfortunately pretty worn) which oddly seems to have shortened versions of both the Pump remix and Anitina: https://www.discogs.com/MARRS-Pump-Up-The-Volume/release/1389528

30 years later I finally get to hear the original US 12″ mix. 🙂

Not that odd (though still annoying of course) The UK and Euro versions also have the short versions.
Even worse, I have the original UK CD-single which had more tracks than it’s Euro counterparts. It’s a Nimbus disc from the late 80s though, and unplayable today due to disc bronzing and data rot. 🙁

If that Discogs listing you linked to is correct, those aren’t edits, they’re the full-length original UK tracks, pre-remix.

Hi Paul,

I know you promised this in a post yesterday, but I still feel you’re spoiling us this week with stuff from the UK House scene!

Many thanks indeed,

Bryan

That´s a real treat Paul. I love the original but the remix is even better and better known over here. I had a day off today and enjoyed listening to the original and the bonus beats (unknown to me) on my car´s surround system. Well, I know what I will listen to going to work tomorrow morning 🙂 And I WILL pump up the volume 🙂

Thank you, Paul.

Such a treat to get this remix from you Paul. I have two of the CD5’s that came out in the 80’s, but they are the original versions of the track. Thank you so much for this version to add to my collection. This has been an incredible week thus far Paul. I only wonder what tricks you have left up your sleeve to complete it? In all honesty, coming to your site day after day is a cherished and definite high-light to my days. You are a Sweetheart!!

Hugs!

Jeff
