“Causing a Commotion” is a song by American singer-songwriter Madonna. It was released as the second single from the soundtrack album Who’s That Girl on August 25, 1987, by Sire Records. Written and produced by Madonna and Stephen Bray, the song was inspired by Madonna’s relationship with then husband Sean Penn, and his abusive and violent nature. Containing a dance-oriented, up-tempo groove, the song begins with the chorus and is accompanied by a four-note descending bassline and staccato chords in the verse.

Since its release, the song has received mixed reviews by critics. It became a top-ten hit in the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden and the United Kingdom, and topped the Billboard U.S. dance chart. Madonna performed the song on the Who’s That Girl World Tour – which was transmitted via satellite to the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards – and the Blond Ambition World Tour in 1990. The performances were included in the home video release of the tours.

Of note the song was not included on the 2022 Madonna compilation “Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones”.

This is like getting a big hug from you dear Paul!!! I so wanted this track to appear on her latest compilation but was dismayed that it wasn’t. I thought it was listed on the inner packaging of “Finally Enough Love” however, while playing it, it was apparent that it wasn’t. Madonna IS Madonna and she has strong views about her back catalog, which I guess, I sort of understand. The compilation is okay; however, I wish they went with the mixes of all the songs that were most popular played in the clubs and not her picks of remixes… Read more »

Thanks Paul, I’ve always loved this song! It doesn’t get enough love in her catalog, and radio continues to ignore it. Have a great weekend!

This is wild stuff! Just yesterday that I was “desperately seeking” an old Madonna track in the BTG archives.

I found alot of Madonna yesterday, but so much more music was unavailable because of expired links. I’m only just now waking up to her music a generation behind the curve.

That’s the story of my life, haha!

Suddenly this morning, here’s another Madonna track. What timing!

Just so you know, I did find that elusive track I was looking for yesterday, and my ear worm was very happy about that 😉

Thank you Paul, for “Causing A Commotion” this morning!

Certainly not in my personal Madonna Top20 but great to listen to the dub in excellent quality. Strange but I´ve never warmed to CAC. I wouldn´t mind Who´s That Girl next. 😉
Thank you Paul. 🙂

It irritates me to no end this isn’t on FEL. My OCD absolutely hates compilations that don’t follow their own rules. Makes me think she hates this song or something…

It bothers me as well. However, the record company purposely chose to release CAC this year as part of the new Who’s That Girl (Super Club Mix) 12″ EP release for the April 2022 Record Store Day.

Thank you, I wonder why it was left of Finally Enough Love? It was a bigger hit than some of the other songs on there.

I also wish that it had been included on the compilation. But these records were prepared months in advance, for release just months apart, and the record company explained its decision in the press release for FEL. They didn’t fail to include it, they purposefully included it on a complementary release. “In advance of the debut of FINALLY ENOUGH LOVE in June, one of the 50 chart toppers – “Causing A Commotion” – was spotlighted early as an exclusive release for this year’s Record Store Day on April 23. Three remixes of the track appeared on the limited edition, five-track, red vinyl… Read more »

Since this involves an oversexed business woman like Madonna, there could be a zillion reasons. One could be simply because she and Steven Bray wrote it about Sean Penn, and she either hates it because of that, or he doesn’t like it, or it brings back unpleasant memories for her. Publishing? Royalties? Unlikely since she co-wrote it and always gets her way, but who t.f. knows? At least Paul listens to the fans and has gifted us not one, but TWO versions of this #1 dance song.

I agree. They could have left out “DCFMA” (Miami Mix) which is horrid. Otherwise the comp would have to be called Finally Enough Love: 51 Number Ones which just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
