BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983
“Our House” is a song by English ska and pop band Madness. It was released as the lead single from their fourth studio album, The Rise & Fall, on 12 November 1982. The song charted within the top ten in multiple countries and won Best Pop Song at the May 1983 Ivor Novello Awards.
Released in November 1982, it peaked at #5 in the UK singles chart. In 1983, “Our House” was their biggest hit in the US, reaching #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. On the US dance chart the song peaked at #21.
Though Madness produced many successful singles over a period of 20 years especially in their native United Kingdom, the enormous American popularity of “Our House” means that they are often regarded as a one hit wonder in the US (though their version of “It Must Be Love” also subsequently entered the US top 40).

Do you have the original version of the song? “What about One Step Below” ? or the complete album?
[[[…My first ever writing(s) here, despite many moons of lurking…]]]
This is more like it. I hereby cat my “Vote” for more like it. (no Don Rump comments. . . )
Got any Bad Manners (Magnets), English Beat (Go Feets)???
For that matter, I bet you have more stuff by something more “dance”-oriented, like this (Also ‘8Ts, also UK) group:

In any case, smoke ’em if you got ’em. Er, uh . . . . . Post ’em!

Many Thanks …. one of my best record … the wonderful 80’s music
🙂
I really cannot believe an 80’s blog such as yours didn’t have any Madness until yesterday! Seeing them a 20th time in December. Been a fan since 1980. I recommend trying to obtain all their 12″s as the A and B’s are always fantastic. The latter half of their 80’s stuff is a lot harder to find on CD plus these foreign versions (i’m from the UK as you know). I really hope one day you could post ‘I pronouce you’ (from 1988 when they changed their name for a short period to ‘The Madness’) which is a great 4-tracker… Read more »
Thanks for the info Neil I am not that familiar with their work so I appreciate your help 🙂
I really enjoy these 12″ singles you’ve been posting. By any chance do you have the Heaven 17 12″ of Play To Win? The A-Side is readily available online, but I can’t seem to find the instrumental B-Side “Play”. I had the single a long time ago. Thanks.
You’re welcome Jeff Hitz I do have that Heaven 17 single I will try to post it when I can 🙂
That’s great news! I’ll be looking forward to it. Thanks a lot.
I say it out loud at home every day, and think it in my cranium constantly, but I don’t write it enough online. So … ahem … You sir, are an outstanding genius of exquisite taste. Thank you for your passion and commitment to rare gems and keeping amazing music alive.
Wow, wow…. What. Great post Paul. Madness were the first band I found ‘by myself’, ie without any influences from elders. And it was just around this period. So very special. I had no idea they had success in the US, and it’s amusing to hear they’re considered a one hit wonder – in the UK they were an amazing singles band (I never really rated their albums). It was hit after hit after hit with them. Really fun songs. Do you know many others of theirs, Paul? I’m happy to point you in the direction of Embarrassment, It Must… Read more »
Yeah they just had this one huge single in the US so I am not familiar with much of their discography. Thanks for giving me some titles to look into 🙂
I for one, would love to find out there is a sixteen minute version of Nightboat to Cairo. O, if only.
Hey Paul, I realised today that you will probably recognise the Madness hit ‘My Girl’ – it’s the one Tracey Ullman covered (as My Guy).
The original Madness version only came out the year before hers. It’s less orchestral sounding, but is a great version nonetheless. It can be unusual for blokes to open up and share their emotions, I think Madness show a great sensitive side to lad culture in this song. It’s really heartfelt compared to Tracey Ullman’s version which is more like a showtune.
Hi Paul
First of all, Huge monster mega thanks for all your superb rips, i really love them!!!
I also love 12 inch versions alot!
Kind regards from Denmark 🙂
Ps if you have something with “WAX” and “Mental As Anything” you will be in my prayers forever! 😉
Thank you Driwt1 I will look and see if I have any of those bands 🙂
Great Paul,
and this is another Mark Kamins’ remix! (R.I.P.)
Hope you got also some Nuance 12″
and I hope you’ll get better.
Respect.
You’re welcome I will see what I can do 🙂
Thanks for the recent shares. As Jeff said, a kind of soundtrack to our youth.
You’re welcome Mothloop 🙂
Thanks Paul.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
It’s the playlist of my youth Paul!! How early MTV (of which I didn’t have, unfortunately at the time.). Great memories to this one. Loved hearing it at picnics and singing along to it on my JVC boom box back in the day!! This week is certainly winding up like a time capsule of classic 80’s jams. I love having the dub here too, it’s like the perfect (sonic) icing on the cake. I’m relishing every moment.
What a blast!!
Jeff
Thank you Jeff 🙂
Wonderful. Never had the chance to hear these mixes before – at least not outside clubs. 🙂
Enjoy! 🙂
