“Dancing on the Ceiling” is a song by American recording artist Lionel Richie. It was written by Richie, Mike Frenchik, and Carlos Rios for his third studio album of the same name (1986), while production was helmed by Richie and James Anthony Carmichael. Released as the album’s leading single, it became a worldwide hit, reaching the top five in Sweden and Belgium as well as peaking on the top spot on the national singles chart in Norway. It peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 in September 1986, behind “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin and “Stuck With You” by Huey Lewis and the News.

I was surprised to see this popular track didn’t show up on the dance charts. I guess a good pop song has that ‘snob factor’ to certain DJs who only wanted to play diva disco.

Thanks for this one! It’s a fantastic song that brings back a lot of memories from the ’80s. It’s shocking to me how some songs like this couldn’t make it to #1 on the pop charts — they feel so iconic but they had some major competition at the time.
One of the best feel-good songs of the decade that did deserve the #1 spot.
I prefer this extended version included here. I love the B-side too, one of my favourite Lionel Richie tracks.
