BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988
“Heaven in My Hands” is a 1988 song by the British group Level 42.
It was released as the first single from the band’s album Staring at the Sun and reached number 12 in the UK charts. It was the first Level 42 single not to feature the Gould brothers, Boon and Phil, following their departure from the band the previous year. However, Boon Gould did write the song’s lyrics.
The instrumental introduction, heard on the extended 12″ single version of the song, was heavily used by BBC Sport early in their coverage of the 1989 Wimbledon Championships. The music was also adapted for the Croatian and Slovak versions of the hit television game show Wheel of Fortune.

Well, with Level 42 you can NEVER go wrong. I own more than 40 of their 12-Inches and I love their early 80´s stuff the most, things like “Are You Hearing What I hear” and so on. “Heaven” is great, too, although I prefer the other twelve inch version. I made a medley mix years ago, starting with the horns section from this 12-Inch and then concentrating on the other mix. My own mix is my favourite version if I am allowed to say so ;-). Thanks, Paul. Gimme more, gimme more, gimme more 😉
I get all excited when I hear of individuals who, with their love of an artist, make mixes, or in this case mega-mixes, and are particularly proud of the finished product. Way to go Song And Dance!!! You’re so great!! I’m also glad you’ve commented. I’ve missed your involvement here over the past weeks. Hope everything is okay.
Have a fabulous weekend my friend!!!
Jeff
Dearest Jeff, you are just too kind. Thank you for your warm words. Business has been crazy in the company I work for since the beginning of this year. In stark contrast to several other companies we are hiring and growing. So I have been a busy bee, too. I´ll try to be around a bit more often. 🙂 Thanks again, Jeff. I hope you are doing fine as well. 🙂
Hi Paul,
I’m a big fan of most of Level 42’s earlier 80s(82-85) era songs. I think by the time this came out I had lost track of them. I did end up getting a lot of their singles, and only listening to them once.
But now that you’ve remastered it, its time to go back and check them out again. Perhaps they will be interesting to get back into again. Especially since they are revisiting their albums and singles again.
Thanks, and will check it out.

I am on the other not familiar with their earlier work. Hope you enjoy this one 🙂
Thank you for this, Paul.
This was Level 42’s big single when I did a semester of college in London in the Fall of 1988.
Around the corner from my flat, near where the big red double decker bus dropped me off every night, there was a painted sign, “Flashpoint”. It was over a set of double-doors, probably a game room for the council flat there. Each time I walked past and saw the sign, I’d sing “Flashpoint feelings flow through my mind.”
Thanks for bringing back that great memory.
Love and light to you.
Chris
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful memory with us Chris. Love and light to you too 🙂
What a fun, great song from Level 42. This, Lessons In Love and Running In The Family are standouts for me. I love their unique sound and upbeat tempos! Thanks for preserving this gem, Paul!
You’re welcome dugn 🙂
Ohh boy those 80’s memories of the Wimbledon tune.
Thanks, Paul for this gem.
Mark
BTW, Your rips are amazing!! However, I couldn’t help it but I have noticed there is a noticeable hum in the quiet passages of the song, probably from a loose ground cable !?
I had not noticed a hum I will check my connections. 🙂
Thanks to you Paul, I am a total Level 42 fanatic! I’ve loved all their singles you’ve presented!
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff 🙂
