Letitia Dean And Paul Medford – Something Outa Nothing (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

R E Q U E S T

Letitia Dean (born 14 November 1967 in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire) is an English actress and singer. She is best known for her role as Sharon Watts, one of the original characters in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. Dean was part of the original cast in 1985 and remained in the series until 1995. She reprised the role in 2001 and appeared on and off until January 2006. In 2012 it was announced that Dean would be returning to EastEnders for a third stint.

While appearing on EastEnders, Dean forayed into singing with her fellow EastEnders cast-mate, Paul Medford (who played Kelvin Carpenter). A song penned for the pair as part of a plotline in EastEnders (known as The Banned) prompted the BBC to release the song as a single. The song, “Something Outa Nothing”, reached number 12 in the UK Singles Chart in November 1986.

Any chance of posting the 7″ version too if you have it? I know that’s a bit unusal for BTG, but it certainly seems popular. 🙂

What a lovely surprise! I wouldn’t have expected this 12″ to appear on BTG. I am so glad to be proven wrong as this has been on my Discogs Wantlist for ages! I agree with Dan, a weird structure but weirdly infectious! Thank you Paul! That’s the time when TV-related singles would hit the charts often. Fellow Eastenders Nick Berry had UK’s #1 selling single in 1986 with Every Loser Wins (a sentimental favourite) while Anita Dobson scored a Top 5 with the series Theme that same year. Then there’s also Marti Webb’s beautiful Always There and Ian Dury’s quaint… Read more »

Here it is!

My mate made it me for xmas. I slashed the arms off it to make it even more 80s.

The back features a mock-up of the swapped synthesizer cartridge (from the climactic Youth Club Competition episode) covered in blood. 😀

Nice pic, Jer, though I was half-disappointed not to see you parading in it…

This makes me feel so old! It’s such a weirdly structured song but I can’t help loving it.

I didn’t know “Sharon” made a record! I’ve been watching EastEnders for years in the US . . . that may have happened before I started watching. Thanks!

It wasn’t for one episode – there was a whole storyline which spanned about 6 months!

Well Paul, my american friend…I have to say I never expected to see a british soap related release like this on your website! Prompted in any way by the fact Letitia Dean has just rejoined the cast??
