Tears For Fears – Change (Canada 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

“Change” is a song by the British band Tears for Fears. Written by Roland Orzabal and sung by bassist Curt Smith, it was the band’s fourth single release. It would eventually become the second hit from their debut LP The Hurting (1983) and second UK Top 5 chart hit, following the success of “Mad World”. The song also gave Tears for Fears their first charting single in America when it cracked the Billboard Top 75 in August 1983. “Change” was also a big international success, reaching the Top 40 in several countries around the world.

The 7″ version of “Change” is the same mix of the song found on The Hurting, albeit in a slightly edited form. An extended version of the song is showcased as the lead track on the 12″ single. While many copies of the 12″ single use the 7″ mix of the song as one of the b-sides, the Canadian pressing feature’s an altogether different recording. Although uncredited on the single itself, this mix is labeled the “New Version” on the UK cassette release of The Hurting, where it was included as a bonus track. Featuring an alternate set of lyrics, this version actually predates the 7″ mix, despite its title.

Some of the UK versions of the 12″ pressings of change had an edited new version on side b of the UK 12″ however the fill length version which runs about 35 seconds longer only appears on the Canadian release and has never been reissued on CD.

Great rare mix of Change. The sound quality is superb as always. Would love to see some more early Tears for Fears 12’s. I too like the Hurting era best of all. The really early stuff seems impossible to get. The Suffer the Children single version is an interesting mix.

I never knew they were offered that. Seems to me they would have gotten more ‘pop and happy’ like Erasure. Either way, I’m happy Alan Wilder joined. There are internet rumors that A.W. will be joining DM in some capacity for the next album. On DMs Facebook page a pic of him was posted with the caption, “Never again is what you swore the time before.”

Thank you very much for posting this! Nearly all of the material from Songs from the Big Chair has been re-released on CD, but the older material from The Hurting is still pretty rare. I haven’t yet found a clean sounding copy of Wino, the b-side to Suffer The Children. The New Version of Change is a treat!

Nice to hear the alternative version again many years after my cassette went AWOL! I was always disappointed that it never appeared on the various CD versions I have purchased…

Thanks for this rare edition as mine is the normal UK 12″ without the New Version. Thanks Paul! I agree with Jer on both counts. The Hurting is way better than Songs From The Big Chair. It’s more cohesive being a concept album, as it traces the themes of vulnerability and wounded innocence. I prefer Curt on vocals as his is more evocative and melancholic while Roland’s is more aggressive and edgy. But you have to give them the props for choosing the person to front the right songs. Curt for Change and Everybody Wants To Rule The World, and… Read more »

This post got me thinking – what if Ian Curtis had lived? Do you think Bernard Sumner and/or Peter Hook too would have sung certain songs, like TFF, DMode, OMD, etc? Love Ian’s voice, but it had its limits. Hate to say that after only 2 albums and a handful of singles… Oh well. We’ll never know.

Yeah, same case with Depeche Mode.
Would they have gone “industrial” if Vince had stayed on? And which direction would they go into had they recorded Yazoo’s Only You (which was offered to them)?

Oh AWWWWWWWESOME!!!

The first album stuff is sooo much cooler. I am still willing to flatten anyone that claims Roland was a better frontman than Curt – a fiery debate which has never had the chance to die down in my house. So cruel how Orzabal de la Quintana just took over the group like that.

Thanks so much… have been wanting to hear this for aaaaages.

Paul, you are absolutely awesome!!!

As a big TFF fan, particularly of their ealier material, I’ve been looking for this rarity for ages. To have it now, transferred with your eye for quality and detail, is amazing!

A heartfelt thank you!

All the best.
