Kylie Minogue – Locomotion (Australia 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

“The Loco-Motion” is a 1962 pop song written by American songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The song is notable for appearing in the American Top 5 three times – each time in a different decade: for Little Eva in 1962 (U.S. #1); for Grand Funk Railroad in 1974 (U.S. #1); and for Kylie Minogue in 1988 (U.S. #3).

“The Loco-Motion” was the debut single by Australian popular music singer Kylie Minogue.

After an impromptu performance of the song at an Australian rules football charity event with the cast of the Australian soap opera Neighbours, Minogue was signed a record deal by Mushroom Records to release the song as a single. The single was released on July 28, 1987 in Australia, Sweden and Italy under the title “Locomotion”. The song was a success in Australia, reaching number one and remaining there for seven weeks. The success of the song in her home country resulted in her signing a record deal with PWL Records in London and to working with the successful team Stock Aitken & Waterman.

In 1988, a re-recorded version produced by Stock Aitken & Waterman was released worldwide with the title “The Loco-Motion”. This release again was a major success, reaching the top five in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Minogue’s version of the track appeared in the 1988 film Arthur 2: On the Rocks, starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli.

The Minogue version of “The Loco-Motion” substitutes the Australian term railway for the American usage of railroad in the song’s lyrics.

The music video for “Locomotion” was filmed at Essendon Airport and the ABC studios in Melbourne, Australia. The video for “The Loco-Motion” was created out of footage from the Australian music video.

Near the end of 1988, the song was nominated for Best International Single at the Canadian Music Industry Awards.

A classic single from Kylie, and a few trivia regarding this single.

1. Locomotion was chosen at that charity event because it’s the only song that most of the Neighbours cast could sing decently, with Kylie, Stefan Dennis and Jason Donovan leading.

2. Locomotion was actually supposed to be released as a duet between Kylie Minogue and Stefan Dennis. (wonder how he felt after all that mega success Kylie got!)

3. Locomotion was at one stage the best-selling single in Australia in the 80s…until Jive Bunny’s Swing The Mood (sigh!) overtook it.

Nice one. Never heard this version before.

Was there a normal pre-SAW 7″ version too, or is that Track 2 on this 12″?

If I’m not wrong, that’s the 7″ version.

I just found a pic of the 7″ – it doesn’t credit Locomotion as being a ‘mix’ like on the 12″.

According to other sources the track length is roughly the same as the 12″ Girl Meets Boy Mix though, so who knows!

Drake, there are 4 volumes of Kylie remixes from her SAW days released, and almost all versions of her singles can be found there.
