Originally posted December 15, 2016
During the week of June 6, 1987, Kim Wilde ruled the dance floor in clubs across America with her chart-topping cover of the Supremes classic “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” which has since become a gay club classic and should be on every Pride playlist.
“You Keep Me Hangin’ On” is a song written and composed by Holland–Dozier–Holland. It was first recorded in 1966 by the American Motown girl group the Supremes.
“You Keep Me Hangin’ On” was covered in an updated version by English singer Kim Wilde in 1986. Wilde’s version was a total re-working of the original, completely transforming the Supremes’ Motown Sound into a hi-NRG song.
It was released as the second single from Wilde’s fifth studio album, Another Step (although “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” was the LP’s first worldwide single, as the first single had been released only in selected countries). The song reached number two in Wilde’s native United Kingdom and number one in Australia. It also became Wilde’s second and last top-40 entry in the United States following “Kids in America” (1981), as well as her most successful song in that country to date, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for one week in June 1987. It later ranked as the 34th best-selling song of 1987 on Billboard’s Hot 100 year-end chart that year. “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for UK sales in excess of 250,000 copies.

Se agradece, muchas gracias!!
Wow, back from a short trip and a lot of fantastic tracks uploaded from Paul. Thx.
Btw. Paul : did you receive my PM on Discogs?
Kim Wilde’s version was released in 1987 but I believe it was heavily influenced, and was probably spotted as a potential track idea, by the Colourbox version released in 1985. Listen to it here and compare them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3LkpIuE7nQ
I’m glad that Colourbox gets a mention here! Absolutely loved Kim Wilde’s version, but at the same time had discovered Colourbox (courtesy of their Unofficial World Cup Theme!) and their equally catchy version which still gets a regular play today along with the rest of their catalogue of music!
Thank you (again) Paul, one of my favourites too, excellent remix, hopefully you can find more gems from Kim Wilde! All the best!
One of my favourite cover versions from the 80’s. Kim Wilde and everyone involved did well to resurrect this classic.
Thanks Paul for the 2023 re-master 🙂
Thank you for another great release, Paul! This is such a killer cover! Some songs leave enough room for improvement (e.g. Tainted Love, Nothing Compares To You, etc.), and the same applies to this song. Kim Wilde does an amazing job and is generally amazing! I still love even her newest releases! I think the US mainstream market generally did not appreciate synthpop and club-oriented music in the 80s (and even managed most club songs in the 90s). Kim Wilde had so many other great songs like Cambodia (my personal favorite), Chequered Love, etc.
Thank you so much for Kim Wilde! Happy pride month!
Thanks again!
As much as I usually prefer the original hit version of a song, this oft-covered H-D-H composition transcends many moods and genres. This is really a sad story, and Vanilla Fudge had their first single #6 US hit with a very slow version (produced by George “Shadow” Morton of Janis Ian and Shangri-Las fame) that allowed you to focus on the the lyrics rather than the rhythm. So in one sense I like theirs for different reasons than the #1 Supremes version. Then Kim Wilde came along with her stomping smash which I above all. Let’s not forget that in… Read more »
Thanks for sharing your music knowledge with us. I do have the Reba 12″ pressed on pink vinyl I will try to share it at some point. 🙂
I’ve loved Kim Wilde since Kids was released, I was in Grade 9, and have been a lifelong fan ever since. I love seeing love for her here and especially in Pride month, Thank you for sharing this cracking tune! Kim Wilde albums always spoke to the outsider in me, she always expressed warmth and affection for our community, acceptance when ‘tolerance’ was the best we could hope for and I’ve loved her music for that warmth as much as all the sing-along melodies! There was a biography released a few years ago by Marcel Rijs, who also runs the… Read more »
Thanks for this Paul!!
You’re welcome, Grant 🙂
Thank you thank you! There can never be too much Kim Wilde.
You’re welcome, Dean 🙂
Love this song!! It surpasses the original in so many ways!! I love Ms. Wilde and it is a shame that she wasn’t more successful in this country!! Thank you, Paul, for this brand-new rip!!
Have a fantastic weekend, Paul, Song And Dance, Retro Hound, Fred and all you tremendous DjPaulT worshippers!!!!
Jeff
Have a great weekend, Jeff 🙂
Thank you Paul, I love this version!! She really brought new life to this Supremes classic and packed the dance floors. Thanks for a great week… Have a great weekend Paul, Jeff, Fred and everyone else here!
Thank you, Retro Hound! You enjoy your weekend too!!
Have an awesome weekend, Retro Hound 🙂
Love Kim Wilde. I think I have almost every song she has released but honestly most of my collection was amassed as an adult as she didn’t catch fire the way she should’ve in the states. Of course, Kids In America and this stellar Supremes cover were the bomb in the 80’s on the radio, but she really has a lot of amazing material right up until fairly recently!
Thanks again!
I agree with you ING she was really overlooked in the USA.
