“Love Is in the Air” is a 1978 disco song by Australian singer John Paul Young. It was written by George Young (no relation) and Harry Vanda, and released as the lead single from Young’s fourth studio album, Love Is in the Air (1978). The song became a worldwide hit in 1978, peaking at No. 3 on the Australian charts and No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, it peaked at No. 7 on the pop chart and spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, his only U.S. top 40 hit. The song plays at 122 beats per minute, a typical 1970s disco rhythm. At the Australian 1978 King of Pop Awards, the song won Most Popular Australian Single. In 1992, a remix of the song was released and featured on the soundtrack to the Golden Globe-nominated film Strictly Ballroom. A new music video was also produced.
In 2017, the song was selected for preservation in the National Film and Sound Archive’s Sounds of Australia collection.
John Paul Young said of the recording, “We actually did ‘Love Is in the Air’ because we needed something for the German market. ‘Standing in the Rain’ became a hit in the clubs over there and then on the charts, so we needed a follow-up. I’d been to Germany and heard the music. It was electronic mania, all clicks, and electronic buzzes. So George and Harry gave it the treatment.” Young performed “Love is in the Air” live on episode 148 of Countdown on 30 April 1978 and Top of the Pops on 4 May 1978.
This U.S. promotional 12″ single contains the same track on both sides, in addition, the Disco version is exclusive to the United States.

Classic tune! Thanks, mate! ~Queertone
Thank you Paul !
You’re welcome 🙂
Hi Paul, I have a short 45 sec recording of a song that I can’t identify from the ’82 to ’85 period. How can I email it to you to see if you can help figure out the song name and artist? Thanks
I really want to thank Paul for flat-out ignoring my message completely, and for the rest of the group, for not showing any interest at all. I did find the 12″ I was looking for (buy the way, I’m sure you’d all love it if you had it), all by myself. I had a different expectation of what this group could do or help others with, obviously I was wrong. Have a good night everybody.
Classic!! Growing up I must have thought Englebert Humperdink sang this. If you can believe the duo who wrote and produced this, George Young and Harry Vanda, are the same duo who produced AC/DC, including their big hits Who Made Who and Heatseeker! Variety is the spice of life… Thank you Paul! I hope fun is in the air this weekend for you, Jeff, Martika and everyone else is this great community!!
Glad you pointed that out, Retro Hound! At the time, ACDC and John Paul Young must have been on extreme ends of the musical spectrum for most casual listeners. Interesting that George Young was the older brother of Malcolm and Angus Young, but despite the same last name and place of origin (Glasgow), there appears to be no relation between the 3 brothers and John Paul!
Side note: “Friday On My Mind” by the Easybeats (George Young’s first band) might be the second-best “Monday” song after “Manic Monday”.
So much trivia for this post. I love it! 🙂
lol … blame Retro! He sent me down that road.
Thanks for the additional trivia Martika. George Young and Harry Vanda were the “go to” producers in Australia at the time, so they certainly ran the musical spectrum! They also briefly started the band Flash And The Pan. They’ve had quite the career!
yeah, it looks like they were quite prolific, and I’m actually familiar with Flash And The Pan! One has to wonder what “Friday On My Mind” or “Walking In The Rain” would have sounded like, if they had given those songs to ACDC … or what ACDC would have sounded like, had Vanda/Young insisted on making them sound like their other acts.
Wow, I had no idea of the AC/DC connection that is very cool. I love how you guys school us on things we did not know. I hope your weekend is filled with fun too Retro Hound. 🙂
Wow, Retro Hound! I love this trivia about the AC/DC link. I love what you have to say about music. It’s so cool how you embrace all kinds of styles too. You’re positively, AWESOME!!!
Have a great day and weekend!
Jeff
Thank you thank you Jeff!! I love your positivity and exuberance for music. Your comments really brighten my day along with Paul’s amazing posts!! You’re a real special person and music fan!
Who Made Who and Heatseeker?! Forget the that ’80s AC/DC radio fodder rubbish with ‘the new singer’, George Young and Harry Vanda were instrumental (pardon the pun) for the REAL AC/DC of the ’70s with the incomparable Bon Scott at the helm of the band writing all their truly great songs (Bon also wrote the Back In Black album before he died at 33 in 1980) as in-house producers at the Young family owned and operated Albert Records .. legendary AC/DC guitarists Malcolm Young on rhythm and Angus Young on lead were George’s younger brothers, which was how they got… Read more »
John, wow, thanks for the Australian history lesson! I don’t mean that facetiously, it’s really fascinating and I don’t think a lot of us knew that already. I see you’re a long time AC/DC fan, which seems to be split into two camps: The Bon Scott years and the Brian Johnson years. No disrespect meant, I know you’re a purist, but from what I understand the question of how much input Bon Scott had into the Back In Black album is one of rock’s greatest mysteries. You stated Bon wrote the Back In Black album. That has been disputed over… Read more »
Excellent posts from both John and Retro Hound going down a rabbit hole like I often do about a band as far from John Paul Young’s #1 AC hit as possible. All I can add is there’s a 1979 Record World with a photo of me standing next to Bon Scott and folks from Atlantic Records at either a ‘meet & greet’ or after a concert. I cannot seem to recall details as those days are now a blur…
I’m jealous! If you happen to find that photo and want to post it, that would be amazing!
Darn! You beat me to it. I didn’t think anyone would connect AC/DC and The Easybeats Australian mega-composers/producers Vanda & Young to John Paul Young so fast. You truly rock!
Thanks DJ, you too!
I remember this song, but never knew who sang it. Your Friday disco posts are definitely a great way to start the weekend!
THANK YOU!
You’re welcome, Martika 🙂

Funny, Paul, because I really didn’t like this song initially, but now, I love it! Thank you for bringing this long version back from your vaults. It makes me very happy.
Have a “lovely” weekend, Paul, Retro Hound, Martika, Song_And_Dance, and all of you Disco Citizens!!
Jeff
Have a fantastic weekend, Jeff, Paul, and everyone else!
Back at ya, Martika 🙂
I have always loved this song, and the vibe it gives me is so uplifting but melancholy at the same time. I think it is one of the greatest songs of the 70s when I listen to it I don’t want it to end lol 🙂 Have a great weekend 🙂
Thank you so much for doing this. When I was growing up, I remember this long version on the radio. Despite buying many CDs, I could never find it. Then when you posted it originally, I downloaded the MP3 before I knew what a FLAC was. I’ve been hoping for some time that you’d give me another shot at the FLAC.
But my wife died yesterday. You have no idea how much this song means today. The lyrics are hitting hard.
I am so sorry to hear about your loss daver. I am sending you Love & Light.
Sorry to hear about your unimaginable loss, daver! I hope you find the strength to focus on all the wonderful moments you shared with your wife.
I was just listening to the song recently and I recalibrated my way of listening to it. The love he’s sing about sure could be the love and the romance that they were witnessing experiencing at that time in popular culture and society a lot of romance in the air, but then it hit me. Love is kind of like a channel. You can love somebody near you and far apart, From long distance and even when they’re gone. Love is God. God is love. There it is. God is everywhere. It’s a truly beautiful song thank you Paulfor restoring… Read more »
