BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986
“Nasty” is a song by American singer Janet Jackson from her third studio album, Control (1986). It was released on April 15, 1986, by A&M Records as the album’s second single. It is a funk number built with samples and a quirky timpani melody. The first and last 30 seconds incorporate the emphases from “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” but in a different key. The single peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and remains one of Jackson’s signature songs. The line “My first name ain’t baby, it’s Janet – Miss Jackson if you’re nasty” has been used in pop culture in various forms.

Thank you, Paul.
Thank you very much for this single you will have
What have you done for me lately
Thanks for this!!! Please re- up the Control single. Much thanks!!!
Fantastic more Janet please!!
Thanks so much for posting this one! I’ve been wanting some 24-bit Janet Jackson recently, and this is perfect. This song kicked off the summer of 1986 so perfectly. I watched the premiere of the video on MTV and couldn’t believe how good this song was.
Love this mix as well as the “Cool Summer Mixes” that were released from that album. Definitely were club favorites.
Great post Paul, loved all the singles and remixes from Janet Jackson’s Control album, cool that Nasty has the instrumental and the accapella.
Thanks, as always, Paul. We didn’t get the a capella version on the UK 12″ so always good to get a different take. We also missed out on the Cool Summer mixes that were released in the US and parts of Europe. Cost me a small fortune at the time to get a US import copy. Any chance you might be adding that one at some point?
Hi. The Cool Summer mixes were widely available on multiple cds. I’m not sure if you’ve listened to them, but I never liked the Cool Summer mixes at all. Not one bit. And I’m a HUGE remix fanatic. The Cool Summer mixes were, in my opinion, the first “remixes” that essentially replaced the entire instrumentation. This was popularized in the mid 90s and often very good. But for some reason the Cool Summer mixes were terrible to my ears. Diamonds, released later, also had terrible remixes if you ask me…and both Diamonds and the Cool Summer mixes were remixed by… Read more »
Hi Fred. As stated I bought the US 12″, so yes, I’ve listened to them. I like them. Each to their own, huh?
Fantastic rip and post, Paul! Such a great song and it was so hot for so long back in the day. I would have sworn it was 1985. Thanks so much for such a great flashback!
Agree with Jeff. Especially true of some tracks in Rhythm Nation 1814 which I just ripped to 24-bit FLAC myself. Still on the hunt for the video version of Miss You Much that includes the chair sequence which adds a few more seconds of that punchy edge.
Thank you, Paul! Great memories and good times in these crazy times…
You’re welcome dugh. Not sure if the video mix of “Miss You Much” was released on vinyl or maybe it has a different mix title. I will kepp a look out for it 🙂
Not sure if you are as big a JJ fan as I but have you listened to all these Miss You Much mixes (none have the video mix you are looking for) for more beats? I put the CD they come from. Miss You Much (7″ Edit) Miss You Much (Single 2) Miss You Much – You Need Me Miss You Much (Single 2) Miss You Much (Mamas Mix) Miss You Much (Single 2) Miss You Much (Oh I Like That Mix) Miss You Much (Single 2) Miss You Much (Slammin R&B 7″ Mix) Miss You Much (Single) Miss You… Read more »
Totally agree Fred, the Slammin’ R&B Mix is by far the best version of Miss You Much. It adds some really nice subtle beats and keeps it moving.
It’s releases like this one Paul that makes me think of an interview I read with Richard 23 from Front 242. He complemented R&B dance music (at the time) that was incorporating harder and more machine sounds. Janet Jackson records really had an edge to them. I was so into Industrial Dance Music at the time, so when Janet’s hard beats came along I was really impressed, like Richard 23. This time period was my favorite for Janet Jackson. She hit hard and much harder than her brother Michael did. I am really grateful to you for posting this 12-inch.… Read more »
Well said, Jeff. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were making crazy good records with her in this period – particularly Control And Rhythm Nation 1814. Thanks, Paul – I’d never heard the instrumental or a cappella before. Amazing rip.
You’re welcome, Jon 🙂
Rhythm Nation 1814 and Control were my favorites I didn’t really follow her that much after that even though she did have several more hits.
YES!!!! Those two albums were monumental and monolithic. Jam & Lewis were powerhouses on these records!
Jeff
I’m totally with you. Control and RN 1814 were her golden eras. Just pure perfection. Love her 80s 12″ mixes.
