Information Society – What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy) (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

“What’s on Your Mind (Pure Energy)” is a song by American synth-pop band Information Society that was released as a single in 1988. The “Pure Energy” subtitle derives from a sample of Leonard Nimoy’s voice from the Star Trek episode “Errand of Mercy”. There is also a sample of DeForest Kelley’s voice from the episode “I, Mudd”. John Leland of Spin magazine called it a “pretty potent dance record”.

In 2009, VH1 ran a countdown of the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the ’80s. Information Society’s “What’s on Your Mind (Pure Energy)” placed at number 74 on the countdown despite the fact that the group had two other top 40 hits: “Walking Away” (number 9) and “Think” (number 28).

The song was a big hit in the US, spending 25 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number three in October 1988.

The song was featured in Loverboy and American Psycho. A remixed version was included in American Psycho’s soundtrack.

In 1989, Pittsburgh radio station WYDD-FM executed an early viral marketing plan by playing this song non-stop in a loop for 25.5 hours — focusing on a repeat of the “Pure Energy” sample from Leonard Nimoy as Star Trek’s Mr. Spock. The marketing stunt caused listeners to call emergency services, concerned that some calamity had befallen the DJs and other station employees. Bob Hank, general manager at the time, told reporters he was only trying to draw attention to the station’s switch in format and new call letters WNRJ (W-N-R-J = “energy”). “We were just trying to draw a little bit of attention,” Hank said. “We never dreamed it would go this far”. The song also samples Star Trek in the intro, with the character Dr. McCoy saying “it’s worked so far, but we’re not out yet.”

Technical question I didnt see on the FAQ.
If a 256AAC is superior in sound quality at a smaller size than a 320mp3 why publish mp3s? Why not the lossy format that’s just as playable in most devices as the mp3? Android phones (the most widely used in the world) natively support it. Any computer running iTunes/VLC can play it. In-dash car systems…it goes on.

Very catchy song, reminds of various UK 80’s bands, but hard to pin point who, even though I can hear a bit of Steve Strange/Martin Fry and slight bits of the Prodigy. I’ve never heard of the band, but hey this is good.

Great post Paul, have you got Adam Ant 12″ with extended versions or remixes that have never been posted.

Your rip quality is superb! Thanks for doing this 12″! If only my rips sounded this good. You set the bar pretty damn high. 🙂

Iconic and groundbreaking, and STILL more attributed to Freestyle than Synthpop. That always puzzled me.

Thanks for the rip Paul!

Paul, any chance of upping the promo 7″ which has the club and radio edits? I think they’re also on the promo CD5″.

This? https://www.discogs.com/Information-Society-Whats-On-Your-Mind-Pure-Energy/release/1119239 I never knew it existed. 🙂 That would be really awesome to have! Those mixes were release on the UK and other 7″ commercially available vinyl…not just the promo.

Thanks for the tip!!

W O N D E R F U L !!!
This song causes a big fuzz on me latter that year. I was a big The Cure fan and almost never listened to other bands whose sound diverted too much from Mr. Smith’s kind. The very first time I listened to this song was love at first listening. The vid was great, too. Funny, colorful and full of joy.

I can’t wait to download this later. I remember some of these versions, but not all of them.

Cheers Paul 🙂

What can I say? Such a great record with great remixes. I only really knew What´s On Your Mind and Running Away by Information Society, and when I heard “What´s” for the first time in a record shop I immediately the 12inch in its German release. That one does not include the percapella so I´m extra looking forward to playing your rip which will be FABULOUS as always.

Momentum! Walk, do not run. 🙂 LOVE IT. Maybe we are lucky and will find “Running Away” some time or other? 😉

Wow. If you can continue the InSoc run, I’ll be over the moon. There’s so much more after the InSoc album singles. “How Long?” is my favorite off Hack, and “Going, Going, Gone” is really underrated from Peace and Love, Inc. too.

It’s great that you mentioned “How Long.” I loved the album version, but the 12-inch disappointed me. That was until I heard the Hot Tracks version of the song. Chris Cox does an expert job on his mix. There are wonderful samples and the editing on the track is out-of-this-world. It’s worth looking for by all means. I am so grateful to Paul for doing these InSoc mixes. Such care on the fidelity and all. He really leaves me flabbergasted all the time. I’ve said it before, but DjPaulT is the “Ben Liebrand” of the New Wave/Synth/Alternative musical genres. He… Read more »

Thanks, Paul! These were great remixes back in the day and I still love them today. The edits/cuts and sampling on these mixes were just so awesome. Latin Rascals and Louie Vega were so great!
