Grace Jones – On Your Knees (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1979

BTG DISCO CLASSIC REQUEST

“On Your Knees” is a 1979 single by a Jamaican singer Grace Jones.

The song was the first and in most parts of the world the only single release from Grace Jones’ third album Muse (1979). In most territories it was credited as a double A-side with “Don’t Mess with the Messer”. The 7″ single featured edited versions of both tracks while the 12″ included a very slightly different mix of “On Your Knees” and an extended remix of “Don’t Mess with the Messer”. None of these mixes and edits have been re-issued on CD. Originally released in the year of the so-called anti-disco backlash. The single was ignored by the record-buying public and left no impact on music charts.

The record cover artwork, designed by Richard Bevistein, was featured in Michael Ochs’ 1996 book 1000 Record Covers.

Thank you so much for this, and all of the Moulton-era singles. The only one I’m aware of that you don’t seem to have posted here is the 12″ “Autumn Leaves” single, which is different to the album version (maybe just an edit? not sure), backed with “Anema E Core.” Do you happen to have that one stashed away somewhere?

Thanks for this Paul.

The album has been remastered and re-released by Gold Legion. I contacted them to ask why they hadn’t included the 12″ versions (as often happens with re-releases) and they replied that they had been denied the rights! The majors are such idiots sometimes.

Hi, Just wondered if any of your ‘reader’s’ Paul, has any Island ‘tapes’ from there original release. A friend of mine has, and he said the reason why the whole album was on Side 1, and Side 2 was blank – was so you could ‘record’ your 12” singles onto that side ! A very ‘relaxed attitude’ eh! I only mention ‘cos not very long ago (it was all over the NEWS) that technically ‘taping/recording/copying’ your CD’s to a hard drive/player etc wasn’t Legal either. You are supposed to BUY the mp3 As well – LOL – How many people… Read more »

Paul, you have done some great work on all these Grace Jones 12″ singles. Many 12″ not only have mixes that have never been issued to CD, But in addition many of them have bonus tracks not featured on the Vinyl LP or the CD reissue. Muse was finally recently released on CD but had no bonus tracks. I know that Island is supposed to put out another 2 CD set that has some of the correct original 12″ remixes as well as B-sides. But since they messed up completely on the 2xCD The Compass Point Sessions. I won’t hold… Read more »

The record companies (Island Def Jam and Universal), never seem to get it right. They seem to release compilations with material that most people already own. As you can see, Jason has stated that Gold Legion who released Fame and Muse onto CD recently were denied the rights to have the 12″ Versions on the discs. Thank goodness for Paul.

Dearest Paul,

Many many thanks for putting this on here. As promised I shall be making another donation at the end of the week.

Keep up the good work as it really is appreciated by us who are fed up with record companies not delivering especially on re-issues and remix packages.

Many thanks again,

Kindest regards

Stephen Gilham.

Thanks for yet more Grace Jones! The “Slave to The Rhythm” album was the one that hooked me initially.

I remember a Grace Jones appearance on Mexican TV somewhere in 1981; I did not know who she was but I knew I would never forget that woman in mens shoulder pads and flat top hair. I also will never forget that this was one of the songs she sang because midway through the song she yells at her dancers “Incate” which in spanish means “on your knees”. My father and I laughed about that for weeks/months and whenever we remembered we would shout at one another “Incate”.

I see you’re hosting your own downloads now, Paul. I hope that continues to work well for you/us, until you find another alternative that is less costly to you.
