Grace Jones – A Rolling Stone (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1980

Side A

“A Rolling Stone” is a 1980 single by Jamaican singer Grace Jones.

The song was recorded on Jones’ 1980 album Warm Leatherette, her first post-disco album, and was released as the first single from the album in the UK. It didn’t garner much attention and was quickly followed by “Love Is the Drug” and “Private Life”. Unlike the majority of the Warm Leatherette album’s material the song wasn’t a cover version but a new composition co-written by Jones herself, Deniece Williams and Fritz Baskett. In the lyrics Jones complains to her lover about something missing in their relationship, which is affection. The 7″ single featured an edited version of “Sinning”, the opening track from the previous disco album Muse as the B-side. The 12″ single included an extended remix of “A Rolling Stone” which was only released in the UK and still remains unreleased on CD.

Yet another vinyl-only Grace treat! The famed original cassette version of the Warm Leatherette featured long versions of all tracks except this one, so the long version of this was unique to the UK 12″. It’s a strange choice of first single, given that it’s not very indicative of Grace’s ‘new’ style of music for the Compass Point albums, but still nice to have. Thanks Paul! By the way, do you have the Steven Stanley remix of Cry Now, Laugh Later? It’s quite different from the original and appeared on the UK 12″ of My Jamaican Guy (and I think… Read more »

What a nice treat DJ Paul T, I just got out of the hospital today (Aug 12), so something nice to listen to, always been a big Grace Jones fan. I hope you get around to re-upping your Nipple To The Bottle Germany 12,” the UK Musclemix, the UK 12″ Pull Up To The Bumper (Remix), and ALL of your Grace Jones for that matter. She’s definitely one of a kind! Did you not keep backups of your posts before the file hosts closed down, or are you only going to re-up old posts after they have gotten re-ripped using… Read more »

Aah yes. Every Master of a craft has their method, it is a “curse” of the creative mind. You are not content for mediocrity. I understand that totally.

Thank you, thank you! This is apparently NOT the album version of “…Rolling Stone,” and I don’t know that I’ve seen it anywhere else. You never disappoint 🙂

Great post. It took me a long time to track down a copy of this – the only extended mix from Warm Leatherette I didn’t have. It meant I could finally burn my own CD of the album with all the long versions.

Just wanted to express my thanks for all of the wonderful music you’ve been posting on your website for the past few years – especially Grace Jones!!! She’s one of the best. If your blog only posted Grace Jones, I’d be okay with that. But luckily you have other great music too. So happy to learn that she’s back in the studio now working on a new album . . .

The 7” of My Jamaican Guy is not so special. I have it and the version is a cut’n’paste of the longer full mix and the J.A.Guy-dub. Maybe that is still on the internet somewhere to ..uhm listen to. I found it that way.

Looking forward to hearing this. Only really know GJ’s more popular stuff, though the Island Life album was on practically non-stop in our house when I was growing up.

I was amazed to discover Private Life was actually a cover. Interesting original, but Grace delivers it so much better than Crissie Hynde.

Even Chrissie Hynde is supposed to have said Grace’s version was how it should have been done
