Genesis – Invisible Touch (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

“Invisible Touch” is the title track of the 1986 Genesis album of the same name. It is the most successful single in the band’s lengthy history and was their first and only #1 single in the United States. It went to number four in Canada, but only reached number 15 in the United Kingdom.

Its B-side is the second part of “Domino”, titled “The Last Domino”. (The album includes both parts of “Domino” combined together.)

“Invisible Touch” came about during a jam for the second part of “Domino,” Rutherford playing a riff while Collins improvised the line “She seems to have an invisible touch”. It was recorded at The Farm in Surrey during 1984, 1985 and 1986.

In the summer of 1986, “Invisible Touch” was succeeded in the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 by the Multi-Grammy nominated “Sledgehammer”, performed by Genesis’ former lead singer, Peter Gabriel.

Thanks Paul for this rip.
Another 12″ in my collection but not yet able to have it on Lossless till now!
This era was surely their most successful, but I do have a soft spot for the “horny” No Reply At All and also the pretty That’s All. But alas, no remixes for those! LOL!

I *believe* it includes the special mix as its lenght is 3:40, just like the 7” version (which is the special mix)

I seem to remember that the US 12” promo is the special mix only a little bit (if actually) shorter

Thanks Paul for this classic 12” single!!
For the next Genesis singles my vote goes to Mama as well, both its a-side and b-side are longer versions, unavailable elsewhere except for a rare 1989 3” cd-single. Anyway, your 24-bit rip will easily beat the mini-cd sound :-))

Then, i would love to hear your rip of Man On The Corner (have you got that one?), which is a special remix version, available as a european 7” and US promo 12”, and i would also like Land Of Confusion and Tonight, Tonight, Tonight.

I believe the only other 12″ singles much radically different than the Album versions are: “Tonight Tonight Tonight” ; “Land of Confusion”, and “I can’t Dance”.

Thanks again Paul. Let me suggest “Mama” for the next Genesis post, as it had extended versions of both Mama and It´s gonna get better, both unavailable on cd. The 12″ mixes from Invisible touch were not on the 83-98 box set, but are available on the Archives vol 2 set. The remixes from We can´t dance would be interesting, but I don´t know if those singles were cd only, or if they were released on vinyl as well? Another Genesis 12″ that would be welcome is Throwing it all away (european version at least) which has live versions of… Read more »

Hi Johan

You’re right that the 12″ mixes appear on Archive 2, but the remastering done on the 83-98 box set is great and a 24-bit FLAC rip of the 12″ mixes from pristine vinyl will sound better than Archive 2 in my most humble opinion.

I completely forgot about the Mama 12″ so it’s a +1 from me too. To answer your We Can’t Dance question, all the singles were released on vinyl, but Hold On My Heart and Jesus He Knows Me were on 7″ only – no 12″ maxi.

Best wishes,
Dan

That’s really cool!
I hope you’ve bought the 3-track edition (Atlantic PR 984), which includes a Remix Edit not available anywhere else.
That’s basically the version they played live from then on.

Hi Dan,
I am sure you are correct in assuming that a DJ Paul vinyl rip will blast the Archives 2 mastering to pieces. Since Land of confusion and Tonight tonight tonight are the best remixes those are the ones to long for.

The “Mama/It’s Gonna Get Better” 12″ has always been one of my favorites as both tunes contain an additional verse missing from all other releases, and as previously stated have not been rounded up on any recent collections.

My copy of ‘Mama’ has recently found a new home, where I hope it can be treated better than I was able to.
🙂

Actully “Mamma” was released as a cd-single, I have it. Never the less I would like to hear the vinyl version.

Anything from the Invisible Touch / We Can’t Dance era, as none of the 12″ mixes made it on to the Extra Tracks disc of the last box set. The b-sides did, but not the extended mixes. A bit like the Peter Gabriel SO fiasco!
