Rod Stewart – Da Ya Think I’m Sexy? (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1978

DISCO FRIDAY!

R E Q U E S T

“Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” is a song co-written and recorded by Rod Stewart. It was written with Carmine Appice, and produced by Tom Dowd. The song spent one week at the top of the British charts in December 1978 and four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, starting 10 February 1979. It also topped the charts in Australia for two weeks.

Royalties from the song were donated to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Stewart performed the song at the Music for UNICEF Concert at the United Nations General Assembly in January 1979.

Carmine Appice, who played drums on this song told Songfacts: “This was a story of a guy meeting a chick in a club. At that time, that was a cool saying. If you listen to the lyrics, ‘She sits alone, waiting for suggestions, he’s so nervous…’ it’s the feelings of what was going on in a dance club. The guy sees a chick he digs, she’s nervous and he’s nervous and she’s alone and doesn’t know what’s going on, then they end up at his place having sex, and then she’s gone.”

The song was criticized by many in the rock press as a betrayal of Stewart’s blues-oriented rock roots due to its disco-like arrangement, but Stewart and others were quick to point out that other widely respected artists, such as Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones, had also released disco-flavoured songs. It was also alleged that Stewart created the song through partial musical plagiarism. A copyright infringement lawsuit by Brazilian musician Jorge Ben Jor claimed the song had been derived from his song “Taj Mahal.” The case was “settled amicably” according to Ben. Stewart admits “unconscious plagiarism” of the Ben Jor tune in his 2012 autobiography.

SPECIAL NOTE:
Most copies of the US 12″ include the album track “Scarred And Scared” as the b-side however this pressing contains the Jim Burgess “Special Disco Mix” on both sides. As a special bonus I have included the rare live version of “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” taken from the 1979 “A Gift Of Song” The Music For Unicef Concert album as the b-side. I hope that you like it.

A reupload here will be welcome too. Impossible to find it elsewhere. Please, if you can, reupload also the Lost in You 1988 12 inch and the Passion 12 inch singles on flac rips you posted in 2012. Only by Youtube is possible to listen today. Youtube quality is distorted and awful.

Thanks Paul. This is a welcome upgrade from a previous version I had. Any chance of upgrading the 12″ for Passion if you get the chance. Cheers from Down Under.

Another Disco Friday treat! Thanks Paul! Despite this spending a week at #1 in the UK, the backlash did come as Rod is seen as a leering perv with this song. The eight years leading that, Rod had only missed the UK Top 10 just twice! And in the next three years following that, Rod would only hit the Top 20 three times. It will only be in 1983 when he finally returned to the summit with Baby Jane. Speaking of the UNICEF album, Paul, do you know if and when Rest Your Love On Me was released as a… Read more »

Hi,

Thanks for sharing (and for previous posting too).

A quick question about the Live version, I read somewhere that it would actually be the studio version with the added intro from the concert and crowd noises at the start and ending.
Either way the “Live” versions on the Gift of Song album are at least studio enhanced…

I myself thought that the music sounded remarkably similar to the studio version. 😀 None of the extra flourishes you’d expect from a live band.

Could it be that it was a live performance somewhere, but Rod sang over a backing track (like they do on TV shows sometimes)?

That’s interesting coz it’s obviously the same vocal as on the vinyl, except the performance ends after about 3 1/2 mins, whereas the vinyl has extra verses and chorus. Maybe done in studio later, or maybe taken from a rehearsal?

Watching that video makes me think this wasn’t the most appropriate song to sing at a children’s charity, against a backdrop of impoverished infants! 😀 Oh, the 70s.

thanks Paul! But this is curious. I already have a US 12″ version of this from another site the catalogue number and A-side are the same, however that b-side is “Scarred And Scared”. There’s no sleeve, just record center scans. Was it released twice with the same catalogue number??? BTW, anyone doubting the “unconscious plagiarism” case – just go and listen to Taj Mahal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0_rQhtKGPA …and then go and listen to Bobby Womack’s “If you want my love, put something down on it” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_XBXtkd76k and then tell me how unconscious you’d have to be to not notice you’d used TWO… Read more »
