Fun Boy Three – Our Lips Are Sealed (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

“Our Lips Are Sealed” is a song co-written by Jane Wiedlin, guitarist for The Go-Go’s, and Terry Hall, singer for The Specials and Fun Boy Three.

It was first recorded by The Go-Go’s as the opening track on their album Beauty and the Beat (1981) and was their debut American single in June 1981.

The following year, co-writer Terry Hall re-recorded the song with his own band, Fun Boy Three. It was included on their second album Waiting and reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart and was the last single to chart in the UK, before their split later in 1983. Backing vocals were provided by Mo-dettes drummer June Miles-Kingston, who also played drums on the single and the Waiting LP.

Nah, you got it wrong, man: This song’s actually called “ALEX THE SEAL.”

I knew there was a complex relationship between this band and The Specials, The GoGos and even Bananarama (they provided backing vocals on their first album), but I never knew that June Miles-Kingston sang backing vocals on this track, who then went on to sing several tracks on the first Communards album!

Thank you for always adding interesting information!

Thanks for the post – love these mixes. I bought a copy in 1995 at a record store in Lincoln NE. When I mentioned the “Urdu version”, the salesperson thought I’d said “hairdo version” and made a snarky remark about FB3. It was like the book/movie High Fidelity (published that year); I half-expected him to refuse to sell me the record.

Hope you are getting settled in the new home…

How’d you restrain yourself from mentioning the context of the song (the affair between Terry and Jane Wiedlin — while he concomitantly had a serious girlfriend)? I think that’s part of what makes the song so noteworthy. 🙂

BTW – Terry Hall’s just done an hour long in-depth interview with Richard Herring (smug and often irritating UK comedian) – interview starts at 7:44:

Nice one Paul! Hope you’re all settled into your new place? Fun Boy Three were the greatest. I think their work gets very overlooked because The Specials were/are so revered. FB3 are often thought of as a bit of a joke by a lot of people I think. Their first album is a bit weak to be fair (although great singles), but the second album, Waiting, I absolutely *love*. Terry Hall’s lyrics are so cutting and funny and clever and sad. And all produced by David Byrne too. It’s a shame Terry and Neville Staples have fallen out so badly,… Read more »

Welcome back Paul!! I’ve missed you a lot! Just got back myself, but kept on thinking of you whenever they’d play music. Thank you for keeping the 12-inch mix alive. I always grinned because I know that your site has the 12-inch mix. Wished you Deejayed my vacation!! I hope the move went well and smooth. Congratulations on the new place. You deserve the best! I love this remake here. I even love the weird club mix on the A-Side. Very spooky and hypnotic. So great to hear it once again as it’s been years. Have a wonderful day Paul!!… Read more »
