BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986
“Oh L’amour” is a song by English synthpop duo Erasure, released in April 1986 as their third single.
It was issued by Mute Records in the UK and Sire Records in the U.S. to herald the June release of Erasure’s debut album Wonderland, but became the third consecutive commercial failure for the band in both territories. Despite its low chart placing, “Oh L’amour” has proven to be one of Erasure’s signature songs, due to its popularity in dance clubs. It remains a favourite among fans, particularly when performed live.
The single reached #86 on the UK singles chart and #3 US dance chart.
First pressings came with a Thomas the Tank Engine logo on the back cover, which was withdrawn due to legal issues.
In Germany the 12″ was released including an ultra rare German version which featured vocals by Susanne Störrle.

The very first time I listened to Oh, L’amour! on the radio was in 1988. Since then, I am another fan.
I never noticed that it never charted as the song got heavy airplay on local radio stations. Must be the many followers of Vince Clark’s work since Depeche Mode’s Speak & Spell album that just enjoyed the song and album as I did. Both extended mixes, the PWL and the Re-Mix from the regular 12″, are pretty good, it’s just so a catchy song! About the German Version: LMFAO, twice! 1st I never heard this version and always thought people were referring to the live version of Oh L’amour when Andy Bell makes the introduction of the band (various synths,… Read more »
Thank you Paul. Just great this Maxi-Single with PWL support! Although I come from Germany, I have never heard of the German version! This is a real rarity. The quality of your Rips is almost legendary! I’m very pleased.
Wow, Paul! I never knew a German version of “Oh L’Amour” existed! You’ve made my day.
11/10 Paul !
I never got into Erasure much even though I tried. That Gimme ! Gimme ! Gimme ! cover is fantastic though. That is what a 12″ should be ! Man the dynamics and bassline have legs and that melodic whistle hook that Madonna ripped with “Hung Up” still gives me tingles.
Great job !
Thank you Kaex 🙂
A great song with a message of love….!!!!
Next we need Liza Minnelli Don’t Drop Bombs!
Then Janet Jackson State Of The World!
🙂
I was trying to go for a message of love AnthonyC. I am so happy that you picked up on that. We need love right now 🙂
Thank you DjPaulT. great song and still their best. this was huge in the clubs – got radio play but didnt get into charts… cheers
It was massive in clubs here in the USA I never understood why it didn’t become a mainstream hit for them.
Wow! I’ve never heard the German version before! Also… Oh L’Amour (PWL Funky Sisters Say ‘Ooh La La’ Mix) is one of the greatest remixes ever. That’s the first time I ever heard Erasure, it was that remix on the radio back in 1986. Fell in love instantly. I remember thinking “oh cool, Vince Clarke found someone that sounds just like Alison Moyet. Andy Bell was new to me. And he does! I thought it was Alison Moyet singing at first, the first time I heard it.
My first introduction to Erasure was 1987 I think. They opened for Duran Duran during their Strange Behaviour Tour. My mind was blown 🙂
Thank you DJ Paul – Oh L’Amour is one of those songs that you can’t not help dancing to – brings me so much joy!
Hooray! Blair Warner that’s what we need more joy 🙂
Didn’t know about a german version of this song. Really funny. Vielen Dank Paul.
Du bist willkommen Daniel 🙂
Woooow Pault muchas gracias por esa version en aleman.
De Nada Carlos 🙂
I don’t think the German Version made it to any digital format. This is definitely a RARE treat from DJ Paul. Again… Thank You.
It did not.
Btw Paul, you’re linking to the wrong item on Discogs. Yours is a reprint without the “Thomas the Tankengine”-logo. Its either 4109094 or 446462.
oops I did link to to the wrong one. I have corrected that. Thank you for letting me know 🙂
Glad to help. 🙂
Thank you Gilbert 🙂
Thanks Paul.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
You’ve made Karen’s and my day with this song by Erasure, Paul!! We’re such big fans and I know we don’t really know as much as you and your readers do about them and all their releases. It’s funny, but I remember this song first by Dollar and then by Erasure. Very interesting. I’m just so happy to hear a 12-inch by them under your strict “rules of ripping.” It’s gonna be so good!!
Jeff
Bonus Beats: I still am excited about Jim “Hip Hop” Hopkins stopping by your site Paul. Proves you have countless fans!!!
I was pretty stocked to see his comment too Jeff. It’s pretty cool that such brilliant folks are following BTG 🙂 Enjoy the tunes 🙂
Awesome. You’ve been on fire since Level 42: Lessons in love. Please keep it up there’s such a plethora of great stuff for you still to post. This period of your site is very exciting and I look forward to each and every day!! Many thanks.
Thank you Neil much appreciated mate 🙂
Excellent choice. So frustrating that they never included this on any of their many, many box sets or reissue projects. I’m looking forward to this, I’ve only ever heard a very bad, low-quality rip of this. Danke schoen!
I hope that you enjoy my transfer David 🙂
It did enjoy it, very much. I’m not surprised by the quality of your work anymore. Thrilled, Overjoyed, Amazed, Flabbergasted, but not surprised any more. You do excellent work above and beyond what most folks can accomplish with a 12″ vinyl disc.
THANK YOU PAUL!!!
Susanne’s version deserved a good rip after all this time. It’s not often that I got to hear it. 🙂
I hope this is one of several Erasure postings!
You’re welcome Goodguy. I do plan to post more Erasure over the coming months and years 🙂
