BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988
“A Little Respect” is a song written and recorded by British synthpop duo Erasure, released in September 1988 as their tenth single. It was issued as the third European (and second American) single from their album The Innocents.
Known as one of their signature songs, “A Little Respect” continued Erasure’s success on the UK Singles Chart, where it hit number four to become the band’s fifth Top 10 single. It was also Erasure’s second consecutive Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, where it climbed to number 14, and hit number two on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs chart. In the U.K. Mark Saunders and Phil Legg provided the remixes, for the U.S. the remixes were made by Justin Strauss.
Written by Erasure members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, the heavily synthesized instrumentation is accentuated by acoustic guitar and Bell’s use of falsetto in the chorus. The lyrics are a plea to a lover to show compassion and respect.

The Justin Strauss dubs (along with three mixes from your recent “Chains Of Love” post) wrap up all the official Erasure vinyl-only tracks I was missing. In fact they were pretty much the last official Erasure mixes my collection was missing. So I really appreciate these, especially since I’ve always felt Strauss’s mixes here were a rare case of absolute remix genius. I echo Cory’s statement above – the Justin Strauss remixes for “A Little Respect” were always my go-to versions. As much as I love the original, his mixes were just amazing.

Funny story, when this song first came out, my local radio station only played the 12″ vocal version (with the “That, that, that should give me no…” ending, and at the time I had never heard the album version, so when I taped it off the radio and played it for a year, it was the ONLY version I knew, so when I bought “The Innocents” and heard the shorted album version, I was disappointed and to this day, I only like listening to the 12″ vocal version of the track…so thank you for this immaculate… Read more »
A LITTLE respect? How about a LOT! I spent much of the last two weekends trying to compile all the tracks that haven’t appeared on the singles box sets, etc. I have this 12″, but, let’s just say it has been VERY well loved, and sounds like it. These rips are flawless- which I’ve come to expect from everything you do. So, I’ll say it again- because you deserve it- RESPECT.

Thank you Goodguy this 12″ was a beast I guess that is why it has taken me so long to tackle it but it was well worth it 🙂 I don’t have that cassette it has been in my want list for several years but I have never found a copy. I actually just bought a nice Nakamichi cassette deck so I do hope to do some cassettes at some point.

WOW! Thank you thank you thank you! This is my favorite song from one of my favorite bands ever. Speaking of the U.S. Mixes only the 12″ Vocal have appeared on CD in a rare promo -but this 12″ is more rare- and the 12″ House Mix debuted in CD format in the XXI anniversary edition of The Innocents album in Mute Records, but clearly the master was taken from a vinyl single, you can tell because of the scratch noises at the beginning and in the middle. I think I said it before here that Justin used to be a house DJ at the Virgin Megastore in Union Sq in NY years ago. I so wish I took advantage of having him sign this and other 12″s. Not sure where I could catch him again.
