BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988
“A Little Respect” is a song written and recorded by British synthpop duo Erasure, released in September 1988 as their tenth single. It was issued as the third European (and second American) single from their album The Innocents.
Known as one of their signature songs, “A Little Respect” continued Erasure’s success on the UK Singles Chart, where it hit number four to become the band’s fifth Top 10 single. It was also Erasure’s second consecutive Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, where it climbed to number 14, and hit number two on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs chart. In the U.K. Mark Saunders and Phil Legg provided the remixes, for the U.S. the remixes were made by Justin Strauss.
Written by Erasure members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, the heavily synthesized instrumentation is accentuated by acoustic guitar and Bell’s use of falsetto in the chorus. The lyrics are a plea to a lover to show compassion and respect.
This U.S. 12″ promo contains exclusive vinyl only mixes.

Oh wow, very nice! Always excited when you gift us with a rare erasure. Thanks so much!
The Justin Strauss dubs (along with three mixes from your recent “Chains Of Love” post) wrap up all the official Erasure vinyl-only tracks I was missing. In fact they were pretty much the last official Erasure mixes my collection was missing. So I really appreciate these, especially since I’ve always felt Strauss’s mixes here were a rare case of absolute remix genius. I echo Cory’s statement above – the Justin Strauss remixes for “A Little Respect” were always my go-to versions. As much as I love the original, his mixes were just amazing.
A truly iconic song from my life. Thank you.
Thank you, Paul! I cherish my copy of this promo. I’m happy to finally have the dubs in your pristine version!
Christian
Awesome, thank you Paul!! Funny story, when this song first came out, my local radio station only played the 12″ vocal version (with the “That, that, that should give me no…” ending, and at the time I had never heard the album version, so when I taped it off the radio and played it for a year, it was the ONLY version I knew, so when I bought “The Innocents” and heard the shorted album version, I was disappointed and to this day, I only like listening to the 12″ vocal version of the track…so thank you for this immaculate… Read more »
A LITTLE respect? How about a LOT! I spent much of the last two weekends trying to compile all the tracks that haven’t appeared on the singles box sets, etc. I have this 12″, but, let’s just say it has been VERY well loved, and sounds like it. These rips are flawless- which I’ve come to expect from everything you do. So, I’ll say it again- because you deserve it- RESPECT.
Thanks Paul. One of the few singles I don’t have a copy. I have a 2009 version from the CD single Phantom Bride EP mix by Wayne G & Andy Allder Hurdy Gurdy Club Mix, the 12″ remix on CD Lost Mixes: Extended Ecstasy and a version on the CD Pop! remix by Avantara.

SWEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Awesome many thanks and predible as this is, MORE Erasure, please!
This is a rare one and most vinyl copies have been played to death. Thank you Paul for another rare treat. Respect!
OMG, i was just thinking about this since this includes rare remixes. Huge fan of Justin Strauss and can’t wait to listen to this masterpiece. Thanks Paul. Be well!
Oh Paul, I love when everyone piles on the love for you and what you do. You are so deserving of all the praise. I know how fans can be quite demanding about sound quality and all, but you are the catalyst and THE ONE whose benchmark should be the standard of vinyl ripping. You are extremely special and I can’t help but cry out and sing your praises at the top of my lungs. You are thee man!! You so ROCK!!!
In a deep bow of AWE!!!
Jeff (and Karen too!!)
THANKS FOR FILLING MY REQUEST!!!! 😀
You know if I had a good connection today everyone else’s replies would be after mine, but c’est la vie! I had to voice my thanks loud and clear, though. You DO listen, and I SO appreciate that you did. Other than a promo or two from Maverick, this caps most of the primary Erasure exclusive-tracked US promo 12″s released – at least those with exclusive cover art. I hope you never stop with Erasure posts, but this was the last BIG vinyl want of mine for a while. Do you think you would ever tackle a cassette? If so,… Read more »
Thank you Goodguy this 12″ was a beast I guess that is why it has taken me so long to tackle it but it was well worth it 🙂 I don’t have that cassette it has been in my want list for several years but I have never found a copy. I actually just bought a nice Nakamichi cassette deck so I do hope to do some cassettes at some point.
This is my favorite Erasure single. It’s great to get these exclusive mixes. Thanks Paul for this brilliant rip.
You’re welcome Daniel 🙂
Big thanks for this Paul. So love this song.
You’re welcome Roy 🙂
WOW! Thank you thank you thank you! This is my favorite song from one of my favorite bands ever. Speaking of the U.S. Mixes only the 12″ Vocal have appeared on CD in a rare promo -but this 12″ is more rare- and the 12″ House Mix debuted in CD format in the XXI anniversary edition of The Innocents album in Mute Records, but clearly the master was taken from a vinyl single, you can tell because of the scratch noises at the beginning and in the middle. This remastering by Paul sounds A LOT BETTER, it’s perfect! The way… Read more »
So true. Paul outdid everyone on the rip. 🙂
I think I said it before here that Justin used to be a house DJ at the Virgin Megastore in Union Sq in NY years ago. I so wish I took advantage of having him sign this and other 12″s. Not sure where I could catch him again.
Thank you Seb for the praise and all the info. Enjoy! 🙂
Karen is going to go wild over this one, Paul. It’s probably one of her favorite Erasure singles. I love it too and it’s so nice that you have ripped it for all of us to hear in your special, fantastic way. I so adore what you do and you go above and beyond to showcase so many different artists and musical genres of the 12-inch single.
Many Thanks!!!
Jeff
You’re welcome Jeff & Karen 🙂
Thanks,
Great track.
You’re welcome jonkofied 🙂
Wow, thanks so much! This song was the soundtrack for my last few weeks in college. I have fond memories of playing it over and over and over whilst bopping around in the dorm hallway with my friend Luis. Can’t wait to throw this in the car and drive around with a big smile on my face.
Don
Very cool Don thanks for sharing your memories with us 🙂
