Duran Duran – Notorious (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1986

“Notorious” is the fourteenth single by the English new wave band Duran Duran. It was released internationally by EMI on 20 October 1986. “Notorious” was the first single issued from Duran Duran’s fourth album Notorious (1986), and the first released by Duran Duran as a 3-piece band after the departure of Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor. It was a commercial success worldwide, reaching number seven on the UK Singles Chart and number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, and was a success in various other countries.

“Notorious” marked the debut of the new streamlined trio version of Duran Duran, as Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor had left the band by the time the album was released. In fact, the acrimonious nature of Andy Taylor’s departure was reflected in the song to a certain degree. According to songwriter Simon Le Bon, the lyric “Who really gives a damn for a flaky bandit” was a direct dig at the guitarist.

As a trio, the band had enlisted the help of Nile Rodgers to take over production duties. His funk influences can be heard throughout the single – for example, the tempo and the use of The Borneo Horns brass section. Rodgers also played the guitar on the single.

For the first time, the B-side to the 7″ single was not an original recording; “Winter Marches On” was an unaltered version of the Notorious album track. Before this, Duran Duran had always provided either completely original songs or previously unheard remixes on the B-side.

As a first for the band, “Notorious” was released as two separate 12″ singles. The first had a Nile Rodgers produced “Extended Mix” while the second featured a remix by The Latin Rascals.

Hi Paul, Loved “Notorious” as a single, this was a new Duran Duran with just Simon, Nick & John and a more funkier version of them. When it comes to the album “Notorious” I played all the tracks every day especially “Notorious”, “So Misled” and “Meet El Presidente”. Warren Cuccurullo added some spice and Andy Taylor “Who really gives a damn for a flaky bandit” (Simon’s hint lyric about Andy) appeared on some tracks, due to his contract, just not sure what tracks he was involved with, even though “Vertigo” and “American Science” does sound like Andy’s work. “Notorious” 12″… Read more »

Another phenomenal one! Thanks so much for this one! Unpopular opinion: Notorious is Duran Duran’s best album. The combination of Nile Rodgers and DD was as good as it gets. “American Science,” “Skin Trade,” “Vertigo,” “Meet El Presidente,” and especially “Notorious” were just great songs. I think the time they had spent working on outside projects, combined with bringing in a producer with such different ideas, created a masterpiece. I know it’s not the “classic” Duran Duran, but I honestly like it a lot more. I also have some nostalgia around it, as I was in college when it came… Read more »

David, An opinion is not right and it is not wrong. Music appreciation is a testament to this. Kiss is probably my number one band but my appreciation of their music ended with the release of the album “Dynasty”. The “Dynasty” concert was also a letdown for me. But, I still love the band Kiss and I will accept the good with the bad for lack of words. Bands evolve and some lose part of their followers but this also creates a new following. I may not like the song “Notorious” but if Duran Duran was to tour we both… Read more »

I´ve always been a DD fan. “Notorious” and – even better – “Skin Trade” are well-played tracks in my household and in my car. Very very late in the day I discovered DD as a live band – I´d never have thought that “Bond. Simon Le Bond” 😉 was a great live performer and singer but he is.
Gosh, I wish they had brought out “Bedroom Toys” on 12-Inch from their 2004 “Astronauts” album. Give it a listen, it´s a great track from a great album.

Enjoy the weekend, Paul, Jeff and everyone here in our safe haven.

Thanks, Paul.
Love this forgotten #2 single from 1986. Freshman year of college and totally great memories.
Did you post this because of the DD shows in their hometown of Birmingham this week?
Love and light.

My appreciation for Duran Duran ended with the release of “A View to a Kill”; which I liked. I prefer their earlier music. This is maybe the third time that I have heard “Notorious”.

If you mention the song “Notorious” to me then the group Loverboy comes to mind.
Sorry to be the party pooper….

Paul, did you ever get a chance to watch the “B” movie Loverboy???

I’ve love this record to the point that feel like I’ve beaten it up. A great restart if you will for the band after the Taylor’s departure. Keep spinning these great Duran Duran mixes.

Thanks so much Paul. This is the song that got me really into Duran Duran. Not that I didn’t like their old stuff, but this new direction made me wild for them. Although lacking the intense fireworks of The Latin Rascals’ remix, I still love this version. Be cool to check it out again after all these years.

Have a great weekend Paul, Song And Dance, Daniel and everyone else!

Jeff

Back in the day, I missed most of the Duran Duran hoopla. But I’ll gladly accept another DJ PaulT custom rip-storations.

Suddenly, I’m in the mood to play some Duran Duran (loudly). Can’t think of a better way to celebrate Friday and the weekend 🙂

Thank you, Paul!
