Burning The Ground Exclusive
By 1988, Duran Duran had moved well beyond their early-’80s new wave roots. Their album Big Thing signaled a shift toward a more experimental, club-oriented sound, and All She Wants Is, one of its standout singles, exemplified this transformation.
Released as the second single from Big Thing, All She Wants Is was one of the band’s most unconventional and daring tracks. Stripping away the glossy pop sheen of their earlier hits, the song embraced a darker, industrial-infused groove inspired by the house and dance music trends of the late ’80s. Produced by Duran Duran alongside Jonathan Elias and Daniel Abraham, it featured pulsing beats, distorted vocals, and an eerie, hypnotic atmosphere that set it apart from anything they had done before.
Despite its departure from their signature sound, All She Wants Is proved successful. It reached #9 on the UK Singles Chart and #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., reaffirming the band’s ability to evolve while still making compelling music. On the U.S. Billboard Dance chart, it soared to #1, thanks in part to Shep Pettibone’s remixes, which amplified its club appeal. The song’s hypnotic rhythm and haunting chorus made it a favorite on dance floors, while its surreal music video—directed by Dean Chamberlain—added to its mystique with stop-motion animation and eerie lighting effects.
Beyond its chart performance, All She Wants Is showcased Duran Duran’s willingness to push creative boundaries—a trait that has helped them stay relevant for decades. Even today, the track remains a striking entry in their discography, a bold electronic departure that still captures the essence of what made Duran Duran one of the most exciting bands of their era.
For fans of late-’80s dance music and darker, edgier pop, All She Wants Is remains a fascinating listen—proof that Duran Duran was far more than just their early MTV-era hits. The track was ahead of its time and still sounds fresh today.

Wow Paul, we’re not worthy!! LOL… What a fresh surprise to have on this Monday. I admit my interest in Duran Duran waned after A View To A Kill, but it’s time for a reexamination. I agree, they did take a chance by embracing more techno-dance sounds while still capturing the essence of what made them great. I do recall all the hoopla surrounding this single. Looking forward to these Shep Pettibone mixes which are all new to me!! I know this 12 inch was high up on many people’s lists in your Friday Shep post, so you’ve really outdone… Read more »
You’re welcome, Retro Hound. I enjoyed working on this over the last several days. I had not listened to these mixes in quite a while. I love how the “Euro House Dub II” adds samples from “I Don’t Want Your Love”. 🙂
Hi Paul, Thank You for posting one of my favourite tracks on 12″ single. I remember buying the UK 12″ of US Master Mix and the Euro Dub Mix way back in early 1989, I also remember getting a poster with one of those versions, might have been the 7″ single.
I miss Duran Duran playing this live, still love this track.
You’re welcome, Paul. I am pretty sure the 7″ had a fold out poster sleeve. 🙂
I was a fan of I Don’t Want Your Love, and this is also a favourite of mine too. Some good variety with these mixes by Shep.
Thanks Paul.
You’re welcome, Mark 🙂
Color me impressed again! I had no idea these remixes existed. My copy only had the US Master Mix and the Euro House Mix. THANK YOU very much for another super rare 12″ that should have been in my collection all along!
by the way, I wish you had created one of your amazing AI covers for this one, since it doesn’t have a real cover. 🙂
Most of the mixes here were spread out over the U.S. and European releases, with the exception of the “Euro House Dub II,” which is exclusive to this promo. It is nice to have all the mixes in one place.
Yeah, it’s fantastic! I love finding a new remix of a decades old song!
I still think you should make a DjPaulT cover for it. 🙂
Man, Paul!! I had no idea you were posting today, and what a post it is!! I liked Duran Duran from the beginning, but during this time, I LOVED them!! “I Don’t Want Your Love” came first, and I thought it was sublime. When “All She Want Is” came along, I was knocked-over by its production and remixes! Plus, the subject matter really excited me. It dripped of sexulality, which really appealed to me. Shep’s Master Mix is phenomenal, and with those scintilating and tantalyzing, Chep Nunez, edits, had me throbbing in my pants. These guys made this song all… Read more »
Jeff, you crack me up! If this song gets you all riled up, I wonder how you would feel about Honesty 69 – French Kiss 🙂
Hey Martika,
You’re so right! When “French Kiss” arrived on the scene in 1989, I couldn’t believe my ears and, forgive me, the way my groin responded. I love these steamy, sweaty, and hot excursions into “aural lovemaking!” Great memories!!
Curious though, isn’t this by Lil’ Louis? Is it the same record? Sounds like it, but with a better artist name!! 😉
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff
Thank you!!!!
You’re welcome 🙂
I love duranduran in all their wanderings. I’ve always loved artists that kept changing up and pushing themselves instead of retreading familiar territory. This was an exciting time for them, Big Thing is an album that visited such varied palette of musical textures. Love! I have many versions of this single so I can’t wait to compare what I have with this as this was a multi-configuration release like I don’t think had existed beforehand.
Thanks!
That was what I love about Duran Duran, even to this day, they have managed to reinvent and stay fresh. 🙂
Absolutely! 💯 love them so much! Give me Ragged Tiger, give me Medazzaland, give me Future Past! Give me a new album soon! 😆
I’m definitely a bigger fan of their earlier tracks, but I do like this song. I don’t think I have any remixes so this is a welcomed release! Thanks Paul!
I prefer their earlier output, too, Mikey D. But I have to say this one is a killer track.
I actually love how they kept evolving without ever losing their original trademark sound. My favorite song by them will always be “Wild Boys”, but I also love their 90s songs like “Come Undone”.
