Depeche Mode – It’s Called A Heart (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

“It’s Called A Heart” is a single by Depeche Mode released on September 16, 1985. It was included as one of two new songs on the compilation The Singles (81-85) the same year, along with “Shake the Disease”. It reached number 18 in the UK singles chart. In America the album was titled Catching Up With Depeche Mode.

Martin Gore and Alan Wilder have often been quoted as saying “It’s Called a Heart” is their least favourite single ever recorded by Depeche Mode, and is not particularly well-liked by many fans either. On the documentary included on the remastered edition of Black Celebration, it is revealed that the band wanted to release “Fly on the Windscreen” as a single, but the Mute Records publicist nixed that idea, as the song starts with the word “death”.

The “Emotion Remix” and “Emotion Dub” mixes of “It’s Called A Heart” were done by Joseph Watt, who is one of the remixers of the Razormaid remix service. These mixes, however, are not the actual Razormaid mix of the track. These remixes of are exclusive to this 12 inch single, and to the digital collection “The Complete Depeche Mode”, from iTunes. They have not appeared on any official CD release.

The “Deportation Mix” of “Flexible” is practically identical to the “Pre-Deportation Mix”, but for some unknown reason, it doesn’t fade out. The “Pre-Deportation Mix” has a fade ending, but this mix just goes until it stops cold. The effect is similar to a tape machine running out of tape – it just stops. This mix has never appeared on an official CD release.

“Flexible” seems to end somewhat abruptly. Is that an error or how it is on the vinyl? Thanks!

Excellent post , did not even know about these excellent Razo-rish Watts Mixes.
Keep up the brilliant posts of exclusive mixes from around the world.
During the mid to late 70s & 80s these were went the best re-edits 12″s mixes were done. In the UK during the early 90s is when the singles market started to fall apart…….the genuine 12″ extension / remix lost its way to mixes that were nothing like the originals………….
KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK

Great to see you back in the swing of things, Paul.
And as always, done in a tongue-n-cheek manner.
Often, a positive attitude beats any medication!
Your cheery outlook and wicked sense of humour will take you far, my friend!
I only have the normal UK 12″ for this, so thanks for these re-remixes!

OMG! ONJ was simply magnificent on stage that night. She could not cram all of her hits in an almost 2-hour show but she did a very good job of including them in a medley of hits. She sang most of popular hits from both Grease and Xanadu, even recreating some of the most popular scenes that made her a star. On her versatility, she went from pop to country and back. From slow hits to get on your feet fast tunes. That voice is very well-preserved. You can also feel the love in the crowd. We stood up, danced,… Read more »

You heard it right, Dj PaulT. She performed some of her rare tracks and of course that got the entire crowd all excited. I forgot to carry a good camera thinking they were going to restrict it but they didn’t, so don’t forget to carry a camera to the show. I know you won’t. 🙂
