Debbie Gibson – Electric Youth (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

Headed To The Mall Week.

REQUEST

“Electric Youth” is the seventh single from American singer-songwriter-actress Debbie Gibson, and the second from her second album Electric Youth. It became one of her most famous songs, peaking at number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100 and fourteen on the UK Singles Chart.

Gibson had written the song as a statement about how young people of that era were seen and how their ideas were often ignored. As a teenager herself, she was a firm believer that the beliefs and ideas held by young people were just as important as those held by adults and the song reminded people of this. It also reminded them that the current youth would become the next generation of adults.

Late to the comments here, but just so you all know, all these EY mixes were widely available on CD5 format. Take a few minutes to visit whosampled.com and look up this song with the various mixes and you will see where Shep got his house mixes. 🙂

The house mix of “Electric Youth” was made available to radio stations in edited form. When I opened up the CD, I wasn’t expecting to hear that mix. Radio usually played the single from 7-inch discs that came from the LP, so I don’t know why my vendor decided to include this mix on the CD.

this 12″ mix is very familiar and it was riding in the edge of the big “house mix” trend. When I was in college I use to use the radio station’s two turntables, mixing board and reel to reels to make myself mix tapes (reediting dub mixes into the main remix with a razor blade, doing crossfades) for the car. (I’ve been transferring these to MP3 this past year) This remix I recall putting in a mix dated 4/1989, along with “we call it acieeeeed” “this is acid” “music lover” and a few housed up pop songs. It was never… Read more »

Out of the Blue was my first CD, and Electric Youth was my second! Haha… I turned 8 years old in 1989, and my dad gave me a BMG music service catalog (where you could order CD’s through the mail– remember those?). They had a “buy 1 cd, get 3 free” deal, so he said I could pick four. I picked Electric Youth, Like A Prayer by Madonna, Paula Abdul’s Forever Your Girl, and Don’t Be Cruel by Bobby Brown– I listened to the radio all the time back then and knew all the pop hits by heart. I remember… Read more »

Hmm. I’m pretty sure this “Campfire Mix” is just the Album version. The Campfire Mix was Acoustic Guitar, Voice and percussion only. But it’s great to hear it from vinyl.

Paul! You have made my week. I was secretly hoping you would post this! I only wish the week was longer as I have still never heard the House Mixes of “We Could Be Together!” Bravo to all you do! Everything Jeff posted above. Thank you.

I loved this trip to the Mall week Paul!! It’s been so full of fun, froth and fabulousness that I could hardly contain myself!! AND, I’m surely not the only one who was enraptured by these songs too; so many of your readers really, really…REALLY like Miss Gibson!! I always kind of scratch my head on what people will respond to. Some tracks I feel should have more feedback, as they are probably new discoveries as opposed to old favorites. It’s really important that the community gives feedback to what you post. I love their input. The stories and details… Read more »

Many many thanks Paul!
I think this is one of the best Shep Pettibone remix (in house-style)
and thanks to you there are all his versions (and in Your audio-quality).

Have a great weekend.

Love it! Just as i predicted on Facebook at 12:40am UK time for today’s post. Used to play this lots. Recognised the ‘We could be together’ (Campfire mix) immediately. Looking forward to hearing that again. It must have been years since i last heard that one! Not that i’m saying i’d still like it now. I was about 16 at the time. Many thanks
