Curiosity Killed The Cat – Misfit (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1987

“Misfit” is the debut single by English band Curiosity Killed the Cat, originally released in August 1986. The song was not particularly successful and only reached number 76 on the UK Singles Chart. However, the following year, after the success of “Down to Earth” and “Ordinary Day”, “Misfit” was re-released in June 1987, upon which it was much more successful, peaking at number 7 in the UK.

In the United States “Misfit” peaked at number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and number39 on the Billboard Dance chart.

The music video was directed by Andy Warhol and also features a cameo appearance by him. It was also one of his last assignments before his death the following year. The band met Warhol at an exhibition in Mayfair and he took a shine to bass player Nick Thorp. He then invited the band to a banquet he was having later at the Café Royal and said he was interested in hearing some of their music. After listening to “Misfit”, Warhol said he’d ‘love to do a video for you boys’ after Phonogram had said they weren’t going to make a video for it. The video was then shot in New York in a week.

I was excited to see this posted on Twitter yesterday and it actually prompted me to listen to an old mp3 rip of the record that I found online somewhere. Great to be able to hear it in high quality, thanks Paul.

hi paul, so cool. we were just talking about them the other day, and here it is. love these remixes. i only just got the UK 12 the other day, different artwork, different b-sides. there is a song called ‘man’ on that. i also have the UK pal CDV of it. they were a great smooth, pop jazz type band. i didn’t really expect to like it after the more synth sounding hit. but the album is great too. there were a few more singles, and they also had a recent boxset with their albums and mixes on cd. they… Read more »

One of my favourite singles and so pleased to see this get lovingly ripped by you.

I still play your rip of Down To Earth and still marvel at the quality, even though it was done a while ago.

Cheers Paul 🙂

Dear Paul.

I was so happily surprised seeing this song fill up my computer screen!! I loved this song so much and was so disappointed that it didn’t get higher on the US charts. I always lamented loving songs and wanting to share them with others only to find that we did not have similar tastes. Thankfully, I have you Paul as a kindred spirit. You have the best tastes and selection of music around!! Like the expression goes: “Curiosity killed the cat. SATISFACTION BROUGHT HIM BACK!!!”

Great track and a great band!
Finally a big hit on it’s second release.
Luckily back in the day they were very accessible. I got to see them a few times live and at record signings.
It is a shame their other albums didn’t do as well as the first.
