Burning The Ground Exclusive 1983
“Encore,” released in 1983, is an R&B hit single by acclaimed R&B/soul singer Cheryl Lynn. Written and produced by the legendary Minneapolis funk duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, the song marked a milestone as their first number-one R&B hit as producers and Lynn’s second chart-topping R&B single. Despite peaking at #69 on the Billboard Hot 100, it became the most successful track from her fifth studio album, Preppie. The song also found success in the dance scene, climbing to #6 on the U.S. Dance chart.

Don’t forget Cheryl Lynn’s amazing contribution to her friends Toto on their 3rd single “George Porgy” from their first album in 1978
Looking forward to hearing this dance classic. Another fine example of Jam And Lewis at their stellar best.
Cheers Paul
I hope you enjoy it, Mark 🙂
I did indeed. Thanks again!

You’re welcome 🙂
This is one I recognize as I had it taped off the radio. But … for me it was at the end of the 80s when everything was a remix and some guys calling themselves ‘Tongue N Cheek’ put the funky drummer sample behind it. I should get to know this original.
I´m astounded that I didn´t know that one – what a groove! I can´t stop dancing to it 🙂
To change the subject completely, on Wednesday I went to see Nik Kershaw play live on his “1984 Tour” in which he plays his first two albums “Human Racing” and “The Riffle” in full. It was awesome! You don´t happen to have “Dancing Girls (Hi-Energy Remix)” in your collection, do you? Have a nice weekend Paul and Jeff, Martika and Retro Hound and everyone around. 🙂
“The Riffle” hahaha. Well, we all know that´s a typo. 😉
I know I have several of his singles but that one has always eluded me. I have had it in my Discogs want list for ten years I’ll see if I can locate a copy.
Great groove!! I hate to admit I only really knew Got To Be Real from Cheryl Lynn. With Jam & Lewis at the helm how could this go wrong! Thanks so much Paul for making this magical season even more magical! Have a magical weekend, and you too Jeff, Martika, Fred and everyone else here!
I think “Got To Be Real” is the one everyone knows but Cheryl Lynn had some great output she is pretty underrated. Have a magical weekend my friend 🙂
Love Cheryl Lynn – thanks for this!
You’re welcome, Grant 🙂
1)Thanks so much, Paul! 2)The video thumbnail image looks exactly like Kenan Thompson from SNL!! 3)I really think the very end of the song (“wooo! alright!”) has been sampled in techno songs…maybe not the original techno mixes but possibly remix services of the techno songs. 4)Although I’ve never heard this song before it’s quite good! I’m surprised it didn’t have a bigger impact in the USA on radio. But it could be that it was simply very early in this newer R&B style of music that really exploded in 1984-1986. Have a great weekend everyone!
This record should have been much bigger in the USA; it has a funky groove and a hook you can’t get out of your head. Have a great weekend, Fred 🙂
Thank you, Paul, for this legendary track by Cheryl Lynn. Like what ING said below, I need to seek out more material by her! What a voice and what a fantastic discography she has. I really love her. This is a great song to start the weekend off right, Paul!! I’m so grateful to you Paul, for the wonderful dance music you share to fill our days and nights with excellent energy and fun! Have a marvelous weekend, Paul!! Have a great weekend, too, Retro Hound, Martika, Song_and_Dance, ING, Daniel, DJ XREY, Fred, and all you Disco Citizens following our… Read more »
The track is legendary for sure. I need to check out more of her discography as well. I think I still have a couple more singles from her to post. Have a great weekend. 🙂
Excellent Jam & Lewis production. Whenever I hear this track I think of The Latin Rascals and their Big Apple Production Vol II bootleg, which flipped Encore in reverse and has to be one of the best tape-edit mega mixes ever pressed on vinyl. More please of early Jam & Lewis 12-inch mixes and dubs from their most creative period before their Janet Jackson era eg SOS Band, Cherrelle, Thelma Houston etc. Many of these dubs/mixes clock in over the 10 minute mark and feature overly creative techniques to manipulate the mix and are only available on 12-inch vinyl. Thanks… Read more »
Wow, Martika, thanks for jogging my memory for that Latin Rascals’ megamix! I love that part in the mix! Backward beats can be so funky! This is one of the reasons I adore you so much, Martika, is because you’re someone who celebrates music of my deep interests, too. Paul and you and others here are definitely kindred spirits of mine!!
Have an awesome weekend, Martika!
Jeff
I have to check out the Latin rascals production you mentioned I am not familiar with it.
Very cool… reminding me I need to expand my Cheryl Lynn collection! Love her collaborations! Thanks for this!
You’re welcome, ING 🙂 Have a nice weekend 🙂
