A Lost Gem from a Guitar Virtuoso

Charlie Sexton is a name that resonates with fans of rock, blues, and new wave, known for his exceptional guitar work and smooth vocals. While many may immediately think of his breakout 1985 hit “Beat’s So Lonely,” his lesser-known track “In Deep” showcases a different side of his artistry.

“In Deep” was featured on the Beverly Hills Cop II soundtrack (1987), a collection of songs that complemented the high-energy action film. Produced by Keith Forsey, the track captures the sleek, polished sound of the era, blending Sexton’s blues-rock sensibilities with a cinematic edge. The song also benefited from remixes by the legendary Shep Pettibone, adding a dance-friendly appeal to its atmospheric production. However, no music video was shot for the single, and the remixes remain exclusive to vinyl releases.

The track stands out for its emotive vocal delivery, haunting guitar work, and infectious melody. While it may not have been a chart-topping hit, it remains a hidden gem in Sexton’s discography, demonstrating his versatility as a musician and performer.

Though Charlie Sexton would later become known for his work with Bob Dylan as a longtime guitarist in Dylan’s touring band, songs like “In Deep” highlight his depth as a solo artist. This track is worth revisiting for fans of late-’80s rock and those who appreciate skilled musicianship with heartfelt songwriting.

Many many thanks Paul. I barely recall this movie, nevermind this tune, and to see a new […to me] dub from Shep is a treat. Thanks again, hope all is well your end and you are in good health sir. Have a lovely weekend.

Wow Paul, I never knew this remix existed! I like Charlie Sexton’s releases very much, I think he was underestimated as an artist. He had catchy songs and liked using them in my mixes and listening while driving. Thank you very much for this all the work done!

Wow Paul, what a way to start the weekend!! I’m giddy for this rock remix by no less than Shep Pettibone! I do have your original transfer, but I’m excited for your new restoration! In short, it’s a kick a** song from a kick a** movie. I actually watched Beverly Hills Cop II not too long ago and the song plays in the end credits. Honestly, was there a better movie/soundtrack tie-in than the first two Beverly Hills Cop movies?? With the exception of Power Of Love and Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough, even Top Gun Soundtrack, how can you top… Read more »

Btw I have the US 7″ Promo that features the Urban Mix remixed by Shep Pettibone. Not sure if it’s an edit of the Extended Version… Could be! I really appreciate this Shep Pettibone exploration week!

I also wanted to say THANK YOU for this outstanding Pettibone week! Hopefully, you can squeeze in another week in the future! Or a similar week with a focus on other great remixers like Kevorkian, Strauss, etc.

I think if you did a poll you’d get a resounding “YES” from most of us, since you aren’t even scratching the surface yet. I can think of one particular rare Shep mix that you posted long ago (and that I half expected to show up today) that would be ripe for a dizzy new transfer…

In case it was already in the pipeline, I kept my clue subtle. Part of the joy of visiting your site is never knowing what surprise is in store, and I wouldn’t want to spoil that feeling… 😉

By the way, 2 more clues were tucked into my earlier reply, so I can say without a doubt that you’re gonna work out the answer. Oh no! More and more clues keep slipping out! Time for me to start heading for the door… 😉

By any chance, do you have the “Hard Day (The Shep Pettibone Mix)” vinyl? Apparently, this mix is 2 minutes longer than the version included on the CD.

Thank you, Paul!!! I love Charlie Sexton, and I think these types of Pop/Rock/AOR songs really benefit from a remix. It really brings out the best in them! I had no idea this remix was by Shep Pettibone, but it makes perfect sense. It definitely sounds like him. I wish he had remixed more Rock songs like this!

This has been a monumental week with excellent choices from Shep’s “remix-ography!! ” I can’t babble on enough about your generosity with song choices and audio fidelity. Please know you’re getting a big virtual hug from me and endless kudos!! Have an incredible weekend, Paul, Retro Hound, Martika, Song_And_Dance, ING, DJ Xrey, and more!!! I want to hug you guys too!!
