BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1992
“Would I Lie to You?” is an R&B song by American duo Charles & Eddie. Written by Mike Leeson and Peter Vale and produced by Josh Deutsch, “Would I Lie to You?” was the debut single by the pop-soul duo, and it proved to be their biggest hit. A major international success, it reached number one on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in November 1992 and was also number one in New Zealand, Germany, and Austria. It was a top five hit in several other European countries while in Australia and Canada it went to number 3. The single became a Top 20 hit in the US, peaking at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and it enjoyed award-winning sales, earning a platinum record in the UK, a gold record in both Germany and Austria and silver record award in France.
The songwriters, Leeson and Vale, received the 1992 Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.
Billboard wrote about the song: “Male duo is quickly picking up pop radio adds with this delightful twirl into a retro-R&B territory. Rich lead vocals are supported by Motown-styled harmonies, rumbling Hammond organ fills, and an insinuating, live drum beat.”

Thank you very much Paul.
Love this, Paul. THANK YOU! I’m in the same boat…”Oh yeah, I forgot about this one.” Really great lost gem! Thank you for sharing. 🙂
Never knew these mixes existed. I’ve got the CD Single which consist Stateside Mix and Acappella/Naked Truth Mix. Thanks Paul for these mixes to add onto my collection.
Steve
Wonderful song although I’m not aware of the remixes either. Can’t wait to hear them though!
Thanks Paul 🙂
Hi Paul,
I always get an extract error on the 24 bit flac download file
could u fix it please 🙂
Manuelle
It should be fixed now. Thanks 🙂
Thanks a lot Paul 🙂 I’m not aware of these house remixes.
You’re welcome Peppe 🙂
Beautiful work as always Paul, thanks for taking my request!
The SIN mixes got rotation in my sets in late ’92 paired with records like Frankie Knuckles’ “It’s Hard Sometime” and the Heart In Motion club mix of Amy Grant’s “Baby Baby”. WILTY was a popular radio song and familiar to most of my audience at the time. These were mixes that allowed us to bridge the pop “overground” with some of the low beat house records that were happening in the more “underground” arena. A real joy to hear these cuts again after 25 plus years!
Thank you, Dan. Enjoy! 🙂
Good choices Dan 🙂
😉 glad you like them
I had totally forgotten about this record Paul. It’s such a refreshing song that I can’t help but smile over. It has a retro feel and it sounds like warmer weather is on its way. I love the funkier mixes the best but all the mixes are pretty good. I love it when you touch upon records that make one go: “Yeah, I do remember this one!”
Again, thank you for the musical memory!
Jeff
You’re welcome Jeff 🙂
Hi Paul,
I always loved this song so thanks for adding it; however, I get an extract error on the 24 bit flac download file. It happens on the SIN radio edit.
Thanks,
Doug
Same here!
Kind regards,
Christian
I have fixed the problem it should extract correctly now. Thanks for letting me know 🙂
Great song, Paul! However, I was always very disappointed with these mixes…so heavy on the piano and house-y feel. But, that’s how a lot of the mixes were styled in 1990-1993. There was a pseudo acappella and a Butcher mix on some other releases…I don’t recall how the Butcher mix sounds but I did like the acappella (even though it was not a true acappella).

Have a good one, Paul and thanks for the hard work!
the Butcher mix is also called the Rufhouse Mix.
Thanks for the link Fred 🙂
