Cee Farrow – Should I Love You (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

“Should I Love You” is a song by the German singer Cee Farrow, released in 1983 as the lead single from his debut album Red and Blue. It was written by Farrow and Lothar Krell, and produced by Andy Lunn. Released in North America only, the single reached No. 82 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained in the charts for six weeks.

Having signed with Rocshire Records, Farrow recorded his debut album, Red and Blue, between March and December 1982 at Hotline Studios. Released in 1983, “Should I Love You” was issued as the first single from the album. It became a minor hit in October 1983 when it peaked at No. 82 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached No. 91 on the Billboard Hot Black Singles Chart.

Shortly after the single and album’s release, Rocshire began suffering legal issues when it was discovered that Rocshire had been financed by millions of dollars that Rocky Davis’ wife, Shirley Davis, had embezzled from Hughes Aircraft while working as an accountant there. U.S. Federal Marshalls seized all of the label’s assets, including master tapes, in January 1984. Farrow stepped away from the music business, but later made an attempt at a comeback with the 1991 single “Imagination”. He died in 1993 in West Hollywood, California of a brain disease attributed to AIDS.

As usual, I’d never heard of the artist or the release, until reading it here. But what a fascinating backstory to this track!
What a gut punch for Cee Farrow that the record label was shut down right after the initial release! I’m feeling compelled to learn more about his story.

AHHHHH! OMG! I discovered this song about 4 years ago thanks to SiriusXM radio, but could not find the track anywhere on itunes or streaming. Been longing to have a HQ copy of this song. It’s such an insansely catchy song that deserved a bigger success.

What a tragic story. It’s terrible to think how this guy’s career was destroyed by something completely out of his control. I’ve never heard this song before, so I’m very glad you posted it for us all to hear.

Thanks so much Paul!! Its nice to have a clean copy of this. With the issues of the record label the album will never be released on CD. Do you think you might ever do an entire album?

There is a non official Singapore cd that is sometimes for sale at discogs, but it has only the album versions and no idea about quality.

I hunted down the album remaster on the Perspekt/F label for months. Well worth it! I can confirm it’s a well done reissue and sounds great.

Awesome upload. I remember reading about Cee Farrow and this tune in German weekly magazine BRAVO back in early 1984, then heard the tune subsequently for the 1st time few weeks later.

BTW, I think Loz Netto – Fade Away would qualify for “Totally Obscure 80’s” category.

Your Totally Obscure 80s are always so totally obscure, I don’t know how you manage it, there can’t be many left!
Getting some Heaven 17 vibes for the chorus of this one.

I do like it Paul! I know a lot of german singers but I never heard of Cee Farrow so this is another great find for me. The mixes are awesome too. Hope this will be a whole week of totally obscure posts. Thank you so much Paul 🙂

What I so love about your picks for Totally Obscure 80’s is the great biographical information you put together to describe the record. I find it very interesting and, at times, very enlightening. It also shows what a great service you do for artists that have been lost to time. Paul, I so admire, respect and love who you are. This site always is such a labor of love that you do for music and the musicians of which we all benefit from. I so thank you Paul continuously for these sonic gifts. Looking forward to hearing this lost gem!!… Read more »
