BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983
“Shy Boy” is a song recorded by English girl group Bananarama. It appears on their 1983 debut album Deep Sea Skiving and was released as its second single. It was written and produced by the production team of Steve Jolley and Tony Swain and marked the first in a long line of studio collaborations between them and Bananarama.
The song is rumoured to be a tribute to teenaged London pirate radio comedian Mark Gould; whom Bananarama subsequently demanded as their Christmas present for 1983 on the Christmas edition of BBC1’s Show Business programme, which was broadcast on Friday 16 December 1983.
Released in summer 1982, “Shy Boy” became the third consecutive single by Bananarama to hit the top-five, reaching number four in the UK singles chart. It also was a success in Australia, where it reached number two, becoming their first top 40 hit in that country. Top-ten success also followed in New Zealand and Canada. “Shy Boy” charted well on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart and was the first of Bananarama’s singles to dent the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number eighty-three. The song was known as “Shy Boy (Don’t it make you feel good)” in the USA.
The song was originally called “Big Red Motorbike”, however Bananarama didn’t like the lyrics and changed it to “Shy Boy”.
The music video, directed by then Ultravox’s Midge Ure and Chris Cross, featured the girls giving a nerdy guy a make-over into a stud. When his new look attracts the attention of a sexy secretary, the girls get their revenge by dousing him with a bucket of water. It stars Terry Sharpe of The Adventures, who was Sara Dallin’s boyfriend at the time.

ooops, before I forget, can I ask why is there more compression for the 24-bit FLAC (around the range of 70%) when the file is WAY bigger than the normal FLAC?
This compression seems closer to that of mp3 and the “normal” FLAC have compression up to only around 30%.
Not complaining, but I’m just quite confused about this.
Ric I’m confused also are you talking about the winrar file size?
I’m talking about the music file itself, though it does affect the entire rar file size eventually. For example, (right-click on each music file to get their properties) Mickey – Toni Basil (Special Club Mix) in its normal FLAC rip, has a file size of 36.8MB and is 39% compressed. Shy Boy (Don’t It Make You Feel Good) (Long Version) in its 24-bit FLAC rip, has a file size of 74.3MB but is 70% compressed. But shouldn’t a bigger size file be less compressed? Most Lossless files are about 30% compressed. Most mp3 files are about 70-80% compressed. My confusion… Read more »
hmmm well I am wondering now myself. I am sure that I did everything as I usually do. I did check some other rips from friends who also do 24bit and theirs are varied somewhere around 70% compressed. The files have not lost any quality. The software and codecs control the compression. I use Flac (Level 8 compression) which is slower processing but higher compression. A bigger filesize *can* be more compressed – the percentages are relative to the file, not relative to each other, you can’t really compare them.
I guess with 24bit there’s more savings to be made as there’s so much more (redundant?) data for Flac to play with.

Similar to your proceeding post, I thought the US Remix is more superior than the straight-forward UK 12″, and I love the Dub too! Luongo is always the reliable remixer.

I thought I’d point out that the U.S. vinyl release of the album Deep Sea Skiving also has unique remixes of the tracks Shy Boy and Really Saying Something. I presume they were also mixed by John Luongo. I have them as MP3 if anyone cares to hear them.

This was my first contact with Bananarama; back in 1983 as this song (and I’m pretty sure it was this long version) was on a compilation album called Disco Dance Vol.2 manufactured in Mexico by PolyGram Discos. Loved them ever since.
