Bananarama – Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

“Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” is a song written and recorded by Paul Leka, Gary DeCarlo and Dale Frashuer, attributed to a then-fictitious band they named “Steam”.

In February 1983, UK girl group Bananarama released the song as the fifth single off their album Deep Sea Skiving. This version became a top ten hit in the United Kingdom (#5), but only a minor hit in the US (Billboard #101) later that year. In a sketch on the early 1980s comedy show Three of a Kind, Tracey Ullman spoofed Bananarama singing “Na Na Hey Hey” (as well as “Shy Boy”), with the words “We are nanas”.

By the way, I hope that the Bananarama streak goes on for a little (or a long) while.

Nothing against this remake, but it stays true to the old adage “If you want a hit, release a cover version!”
After the unfortunate hiccup that is Cheers Then, the ‘nana’s wisely got back on track with a more familiar tune and more cheery faces. And it doesn’t hurt that the title has some Na-Na’s in it too.
This MEGA ‘nana spotlight here can go on and on, and seems like no one is complaining!
Thank you Paul!
Happy Weekend!

Only one more left? That’s Cruel as Summer! LOL!
But I guess all good things must come to an end…
Plus, I’m glad there’s a second installment planned somewhere down the Burning The Ground road.
I’m sure Robert De Niro will be Waiting…so will many of us here!

Could be Aie A Mwana!

Was the original single version the same recording as on Deep Sea Skiving, does anyone know?

Not the biggest fan of Bananarama I have to say. But a Dennis Bovell mix? I have to give that a listen! Thanks very much for that.

Keep the streak coming!
I’m not a new commenter – last time was the Nana’s “Hot Line To Heaven” – but I’m gonna make sure I show my love more often!
You do such an incredible job – and hit songs I never thought I’d see – so I’m gonna make sure you know how much I appreciate you and hopefully the other visitors will show their love too!
After all, you always show YOUR appreciation!
Love you much and love your hard work!
Have an incredible weekend!
XOXO

Loving the Banana streak, Paul! And I actually wouldn’t mind another week of it, though I know you don’t like to linger on one act too long. But if I had any say in the next eventual run, I’d vote for more Dead Or Alive, Eurythmics…or Prince, who’s a little underrepresented here. Actually, for a one-off, do you have Sting’s “Love Is The Seventh Wave”? The single version of that is elusive.

Thank you, in any case! The ongoing surprise is half the fun.
